Cheap Trick, Poison, Def Leppard Concert

The thing with Def Leppard is, Joe Elliot has been singing that stuff with them since he was like 16 years old. They have taken one or two extended breaks in their career (for obvious reasons), but by and large they've been one of the harder-touring bands around. That is a TON of mileage to put on a voice.

Of all the times I saw them- an opening slot for Aerosmith was also my least favorite... CT's sound was not so good, and Aerosmith played way too much Honkin on bobo stuff. The crowd was ok for CT, but didnt dig the 'Smith blues album set. But, Joe Perry and Tom Hamilton were smokin- so that helped me a little :smug:

What I like about them- they give the crowd a hits filled set w/ good sound... at least when Ive seen them. Joe is Joe: some like it some dont, but if the Leps are what you like then they still deliver the goods

Ha! I saw Ratt with Poison back in 1987. Admittedly, I was on-duty as a security guard at that particular amphitheater and it was at the height of their popularity, but still thought it was a joke of a show. Lots of lights and reflective things, but not worthy of the price of whatever people paid to see them, IMO.

BTW I like the song and I love the band. They are much better suited for bigger arenas or outdoor environments, though... I saw them 10 yrs ago or so in a little club here in town and they were just ungodly loud. It was like, festival stage volume in a 500 capacity room.

This is referring to "The Flame," and it is an anomlay because they didn't write it.

I do think it is a pretty good song, just wanted to clarify that it was written by people not in Cheap Trick. That was actually the first time I had ever heard of them. Since then, I think I have played "Surrender" live about 500 times and still love playing it, although my soul band doesn't do it...

I'd love to see Cheap Trick again. My very first concert--CT on the Dream Police tour (30 years ago :eek:), playing over 2 hours with no opening act. They were great! I saw them twice more in the next couple years, then lost track of them as they went into a slump (IMO) and I started listening to punk.

But jeez, I never liked these other bands they're being paired with now. Def Leppard, Poison? No thanks.

I saw the CT/Poison/Def Lep show here in Dallas last night. They played the "Superpages.com Center" which is an amphitheatre with a covered/reserved section and a huge open-air lawn. The sound out in the lawn was really low, lowest I've ever heard there. Maybe because the crowd was 30-and-up :p

CT was really good, their mix was good and they sounded tight, almost "just like on the albums". Did all their classics, I only wish they had gotten more stage time...

Poison was pretty weak - they did the 10-minute guitar solo, and Brett referred to CC by name at least 100 times. I was joking with my buddies that CC is the Beetlejuice of lead guitar - you have to say his name 3 times to get a solo... The bass was almost unnoticeable - on "Your Mama Don't Dance" it really sucked because the bass line makes that song IMHO. They did dedicate "Something to Believe In" to the Armed Forces, so props for that...

Def Lep was great all-around, I second what everyone else said about Joe not hitting the high notes anymore, but most of us never could in the first place. There were plenty of soccer mom's screaming along to fill in. Savage's bass was audible, but pretty muddy as far out from the stage as we were...

It was my first time seeing any of these bands live, so for the $25 I paid, it was definitely worth it...

What Ive heard of Trick's new album The latest sounds pretty good. Really like Special one from '04... and the last one Rockford wasnt bad, either...

I would like to see them again- I'd rather wait on a smaller headline show... its been my best experience w/ them!

The only time I heard Petersson in their set was during "Sick Man Of Europe" from the new album - nice bassline

LOL at the # of C.C. references - seeing other posts reminded me of that from the show. Yep - his solo is at least 5 minutes and just gymnastics on the guitar - no structure, dynamics, anything musical.

Cheap Trick was awesomely awesome, I think they played Way of the World at our show. Great performance on all the songs, I could hear everyone very well except for Petersson, but I chalked in down to how his bass works, the crowd wasn't digging them though.

Poison sucked big time and was really boring, which crowd cheered for tenfold they did for Cheap Trick. :scowl:

Def Leppard was good but I'm not a fan of hit laden setlists though.

The 12 string hasnt ever been that great for their shows that Ive heard- except for the Hamer that Tom used to use... I heard those better than the Chandlers or Waterstones. The club show that I saw Tom played a new Hofner, Fender P bass, and mostly a Gibson Thunderbird thru Hiwatt amps... and he was RIGHT THERE in the mix :bassist:

Am I the only one here who likes Poison? They rock! Fallen Angel, Good Love, Sexual Thing. There pretty rockin! I'd see them over Def Leppard and Cheap Trick any day to be honest... C.C. Deville is good guitarist too! Not the best but hes one of my favorites. The bass isn't anything special but Its fun to improvise over.

I like the band.. always have. But it's not for their impressive musical abilities..lol.. it's just a fun band. I have seen them over the years and usually, they sound like Poison. Where, Joe can't hit the high notes in Def leppard, At least Bret always sounds like Bret.

As for the talent of the band.. They have never impressed me.. that goes for any of them. They are not really talented musicians. CC soloing is a joke. It's funny. But if you wanna see hot women and have fun, go see a Poison show. Save your bathroom trip for the guitar and drum solo.

I quite like Poison, but have to admit that the classic lineup albums are pretty much bubblegum pop-rock. Lot's of flavour and flash, but no real substance. CC's ok in the studio but I wish he would control himself live and stop fret-wanking. Widdle widdle widdle with no sense of melody. His epic solo on Swallow This Live has gone down in history as probably the worst guitar solo of all time.

As popular as the classic lineup is, I much prefer Native Tongue with Richie Kotzen instead of CC. He is literally all over that album. He made them sound like a talented, mature rock band, so much depth, feeling and substance. Seriously, if you're not a Poison fan, check this album out.

Also a huge Def Lep fan boy, have been since Hysteria (although I prefer the earlier stuff, particularly High n Dry. I'm quite pleased to see they are starting to put earlier work in their sets these days, I think they have realised their audiences aren't mainly kids any more but lifelong fans who want the classics. Sure Joe'd voice isn't what it was, but he works hard and lets be honest, starting to get on a bit.

BTW, who care's if it doesn't sound like the album? Who cares if they can't recreate the densely multi-layered harmonies completely live? Studio and live are completely different animals. Queen never did either, but that never stopped them becoming one of the best live acts in the world. If you want to watch a band that sounds like the album, watch videos on MTV.
