"Check In" here before and after your gigs, Set #2, the sequel!

Maybe not a true gig, but we played an open mic last night (only our second) at Foobar in Portsmouth, NH. We were the first to show up and there were no other musicians there at first, so they pretty much gave us the run of the place. A bunch of friends and family showed up so it was a good friendly environment, not playing to the crickets.

We did an initial short set -
Mary Jane's Last Dance/Tom Petty
Supersonic/Oasis
Say Please/Monsters of Folk
Heart of Stone/Rolling Stones
Don't Let Me Down/Beatles
and a couple of originals - all a relatively mellow set of songs.

Then the singer/songwriters showed up with their acoustics, and our guitarist got tapped for an impromptu blues trio. Finally we got up and played a short fast second set --
Basket Case/Green Day
Crumblin' Down/Mellencamp
Hound Dog/Elvis
Rockin in the Free World/Neil Young

Crumblin' Down was totally hyper and wrong, but oh well.

I was dying up there -- I hadn't realized how many distractions there can be in a live show. I was playing through a Hartke amp, very nice but not my own, and not plugged into the sound board, so the sound guy came onto the stage two or three times to tweak the volume. We had no mic on our drummer, who sings some of hte backup vox, so I tried to jump in on his part... etc etc the upshot is I flubbed at least one thing on every single song. The good news is that the audience didn't seem to notice or mind and we had a great time anyway. I think it did a lot to help the band gel, and we got to network some with the hosts and some other musicians. Can't wait for the next one!

Didn't check in, but we did a battle of the bands on sunday. Solid show, cept we were the only death metal vs. A worship christian metal band, a progressive blues band, post hardcore christian, southern rock and a nu metal band. Needless to say, it was an interesting experience. Oh, we didn't win, lol that nu metal band, Wolfcreek took it home.

Did not check in before the gig because it was Sat night after Black Friday and figure in would be a poor showing and my hunch was correct 6 people not including the owner bouncer and one bar maid so yeah tuned into what would be considered an unpaid practice only difference the owner was a good guy and since we had 3 of the clubs best nights ever he paid us the full amount! So listen learn never take the gig on the day after or on Black Friday Next show Dec 3 let you know how it turns out RTS

Got a call from a drummer 2 weeks ago, his bass player broke his hand, so after learning 40 songs, and with 2 rehersals, played a gig last nite, it went good too, i think i surprised myself. The band and the fans were all about 5-10 years older than me though, but i was funny watching a bunch of older drunk chicks dancin around ;D

Tonight's gig will have me heading north for a change. I'm playing with a blues-rock guitarist with whom I've done a couple of duo gigs. Tonight he'll have a drummer as well, thank goodness! We'll be doing power trio, SRV, Hendrix, Clapton & classic blues type stuff. Last night I spent some time dailing up a couple of overdrive sounds on my BP50 processor, eager to hear how they work!

The gig is at Alibi's, on Pitt St. in Carlisle PA, drop on by!

wow so i played a gig tonite at some ****** bar, and there were these two young drunk chicks dancing to our last tune, they were really tall, i'm 5'10 and they were taller. so the cute blonde is motioning to me to dance w/ her so i did, bass and all, i whispered in her ear that i got more money and better drugs than her drunk boyfreind, but she didn't go for it, that's why i'm here at home typing this post.. oh well...

The drive up there took almost exactly as long as predicted, and I found the place no problem. Load-in was a breeze thru the back door. I like it when I don't have to schlep my stuff through the room. Had a burger with "dragon's-breath" cheese on it, a Mexican coffee and I was ready to go!

The drummer was a last-minute arrival, but he was coming from about 100 miles away. Turned out I played at a jam with him a couple of years ago, thankfully he's pretty good. He likes the double-kick pedals a bit too much, but he has skills, so it was tolerable. My new Squier Jazz did the job well, so I'm happy about that. Overdrive settings on my BP50 need a bit more tweaking, but it's a good start.

The gig itself was good enough for me to admit that we played Mustang Sally, and it was rockin'! Crowd was on the young side, Carlisle is a college town.

Tonight's gig: with my brother at a barbecue joint in Rockville MD, called Branded 72. A new place for me. Food is supposed to be good, I wonder if they have "dragon's-breath" cheese? :p At least it will be a shorter drive, and I'll get to sing a few songs. I'll go with the Spector tonight. :bassist:

Our band did an open mic night at a popular local club, our lead guitard is friends with the owner, so were welcome anytime, this is our 2nd time playing there and our 8th gig altogether. It couldnt have gone better! I had to learn 4 new songs (covers) in a week, and being that I have 3 jobs, it was challenging. We got together 3 hours before the gig to rehearse them, only went over them about 3-4 times each, thankfully the tunes were very technical, but we were still feeling a bit unprepared. A boat load of friends and coworkers were attending so naturally we wanted to shine. We rocked the crap out of that building!, pulled off those new songs alot better than expected, a few minor mistakes but barely even noticeable. We played for 1 1/2 hours, and heard shouts of playing more and doing it all over again. I was really proud of myself and the band. The partying afterwards was just as great, but thats another story,lol. The club owner was impressed with our performance as well as the crowd that turned out to see us, Thursday nights arent usually that "busy" he told us.....Im sure his income that night spiked. Anyway, another great gig for the books.

Pic from Saturday's gig at Club 156 in Boulder, CO... Fun time. I'd say about 50 or so made it out. Not bad, but less than expected. Oh, well. Still had a great time.

Well I guess I'll post about our most recent show. I am in a local band called "The Whiskey Pilots" (Link Removed), and we opened up for CKY Nov 1st at the Machine Shop in Flint Michigan. We pretty much wiggled our way into this show thanks to our charismatic drummer.

In short, this show was amazing. There was no prep for this show other than making demos, we don't believe in practicing before a show. Other than making my bass a bit too quiet, the sound guys here are amazing. For once sound people who know what they are doing! The venue itself is pretty cool, a smaller place making the shows more personal, but LOUD! It was fun to play and hang out with the other bands, a true gig experience. On top of all this we shot a dvd of the show :hyper: . Well, thats my most recent gig. If you want check out the myspace link and tell me what you think.

The baby back ribs were great, I didn't even use the sauces they had! The gig went fairly well, although the room wasn't full, it was more folks than they usually have. The waitress said she did much better than usual. So we made a good impression. :cool:

Tonight's gig: with Brandy Stills, country at the Moose lodge in Leesburg. I know I've mentioned this before, but they have Smithwick's on tap! :hyper:

I'm having a weird urge to bring out the Kramer metal-neck bass for tonight. Guess it couldn't hurt...

Mellow gig this evening with Folk in A (the tune "Dona Elizabeta" in my sig is one of ours) at a very cool coffeehouse in Santa Cruz called The Ugly Mug.
We'll be playing mostly original instrumental music - guitar and fretless bass.
My partner in that duo is a great guitarist and human being, and it's a pleasure to play music together.

Okay We played a gig last night one of those that came out of the blue. A fan of ours stopped in a club in my home town that had just opened again. This was a place that never had bands so I was surprised to get a call from a guy with this location. But the fan had talked us up big and the owner wanted to give us a shot. with no time to get the word out since it was less then a week away (This is the one I'd already mention in a early post.) We shot out a quick face book event and hoped for the best. My singer I found out Thursday is battling a sore throat so the whole thing was up in the air till Friday morning when he said he would try to sing. Since the place is a new venue for us and already booked we give it a shot. Here is the band performing Gary Moore's Still Got the Blues for you, MIM Fender P Sans amp direct to Bose Pa support 4 sub woofers no bass amp. we got through it but he was hurting. People loved the band anyway and the owner booked us for two more shows in Jan since it was only 5 blocks from my house and an 8:30 start I was home at 1:15. thanks RTS

Played a sub gig with a local folk singer/songwriter. Acoustic guitar, lap steel, drums, and me on bass. It was going to be recorded and I had only practiced with the guy once. It sounded great to the audience because I can pick up on stuff fast enough/learned the song structures, but unfortunately I was being recorded direct, so my fiddling around really quietly will definitely be noticeable on the recording. Hope they can just bury me in the mix to where it's not audible.
