Played a pick-up wedding gig this weekend. Straight-ahead jazz--and people actually danced!

Seemed to be a very music-savvy crowd. What little they didn't dance to, most were still very appreciative.

The venue was an old restored train depot. The sax player, who arranged the gig, had us show up really early for a sound-check. I'm glad he did--the place was a barn, and we were tucked back in a little alcove that sucked up our sound. It took a little while for us to get it dialed in so we didn't sound like overcooked cheese whiz in a pot.

turned up to to watch my bands singer and guitarist play an acoustic open mic gig about 30mins drive away, didn't take a bass with me expecting just to watch. a lad there had a fretless kala U-bass, asked if i could borrow the instrument guy said yes he didn't mind, bought him a drink and got down to some playing. felt strange at first but once you get used to the strings felt really good and sounded great. bass volume a little low as didn't have a preamp but gig sound felt good (mics and bass through pa). played through some orginal songs and some covers, "the chain" sounding incredible. "all right now" rocked the house and finished off with "la bamba" crowd very appreciative, never played live with that instrument before or with the guys playing acoustics, such a good gig that happens every month i feel like i'm going to have to buy and acoustic bass guitar.

Okay rocked in Oct. Place was packed, so we were really happy when we got there. Set up went with out a hitch then during the second song of the night my bass goes out so it is going in and out so I figure the patch cord going to the wireless must be shot? Before the 3rd song the tech and I are trying to figure out what is going on pulling cords out of each unit to find the problem ended up trashing the wireless for a direct cable to the bass guitar and that fixed that problem but, now the bass is too hot into the Pa so I need to tweak the settings to find my sound. Rest of the night went well got in the house at 2:15AM have to go to the studio this morning and test my gear just hope the wireless isn't shot had it since 1980 real work horse many many shows under it's belt. Show this Friday hit you back Sat ltr. RTS

We're playing a big outdoor show Saturday to benefit the families of two local soldiers, one killed and one seriously wounded in Afghanistan. Sponsored by an American Legion Post, a VFW and a Motorcycle Club. They printed 500 tickets and they sold out weeks ago, so who knows how many will show up at the gate, maybe 1000. We're really excited as this kind of charity hits home with members of our band.
One concern is we play from about 7:30-10:00pm and it'll be about 45 degrees with 20 mph winds. Wish I could play with gloves on. :hmm: But, a little discomfort is nothing compared to what these guys went through and their families are going through.

Hello people we played Friday at the Wexford Inn in Lincoln Park, Nj. We have played here one time before and the owner asked us back the same night. Got there at 8PM
the crew was unloading the equipment and I went in to see if we could set up in a different area than the last time. The place has a large fireplace with the opening is about five foot across so last time they had us set up in front of the fireplace the bass sound was lost to no solid wall behind me so I had the band set up on a wall across from the bar middle of the dining room. the pool table was going to be the only problem but the crew moved in a couple of feet and then the plan worked out. We rock the place the sound was great I had my sweet spot to the right of the drummer I was punchy and clean.End of the night owner asked us back again so look forward to rocking it again only thing that happen to speak of was a state trooper came along side and hit me with side flood I guess he wanted a good look at a bass player ha ha ha anyway I did not even turn my head to look at him had I, I would have been blinded by it! I was going 55 so he had nothing to work with so he went a head and got in the center lane with me I guess I was running the screen because some dumb ass blows by me like I am standing still and the trooper waited for him to pass and jumped up his ass so NJ State trooper earning his money. Great Job take the jerks off the road keeping it safe for bass players like us who have to share the roads with these a88 holes at 2AM yeah took the next exit home by 2:30.Rock both nights next weekend.RTS

Didn't post beforebut here's the AFTER post.

Got there at about 4:45. We were the first band scheduled on a two-band bill, and the second band was to do sound the whole weekend (Fri/Sat/Sun). When I got there, the second band had just started unloading the PA gear. Needless to say, we didn't start on time. That cut our show about 2 hours short.

Sound guy / lead guit for the 2nd band was a d**k pretty much the whole time. We got no sound check (although his gear did), so he was running back and forth the whole short time we played working on sound. Oh, and he tried to mix from stage -- not the thing to do on a multi-band gig.

All the drama pretty much freaked out the "kid" guit we're using, so he decided to add some drama of his own. He pretty much just laid down and quit about 1-1/2 hours into the show because he didn't sound right out front or in the monitors. So it crashed to a stop, just about the time we were rolling really good.

Pretty much sucked. Our drummer has to have major surgery for tendon damage on his right hand, so I think we're done.

Good thing I have two other projects waiting in the wings.......

Next gigs: this Friday with Brandy Stills at the Leesburg Moose...
New drummer is still rushing a bit, but we will fix that.

...Saturday a sub gig with the Grateful Dead band I recently left, On The Bus, at a festival at Buffalo Gap campground out in Capon Springs WV.
I had a good time at this event, but the lead guitarist didn't, he was sick & had to go toss his cookies mid-set. Understandably, he wasn't at his best musically. And wouldn't you know, the band after us hadn't arrived from Ohio when we reached the end of our allotted time, so we were asked to play longer. But we made it through, and I'm now waiting for word on whether we actually got the promised money. You never know with these hippy festivals. I hope so, we earned it!

Unfortunately, I heard today that the venue will be closing permanently, due to financial anemia. A shame, it's a great spot w/excellent stage.

Tonight's gig: Marsh Brothers Band at the Potomac Grill in Rockville MD. I hope we play well, but in any case, good eats!

Did the local club crawl on Saturday night. Load in time was like 7 pm .. we didnt play till 12:30. Long night. The other bands were cool to hear as most were quite different than ours. Unfortunate incident with the bouncers and one of our fans before we even played kind of marred the whole affair. I always wonder what the heck is up with those over-testosteroned beings ... seem to always pull the trigger long before they even attempt to find out facts. Drummer's son ended up with a concussion and in the hospital because 5 of the Bouncers decided to use him to practice their airplane skills. Kid is gentle as a lamb as well, still blows me away. He came to the rescue of a girl in the bar and for his efforts gets put in the hospital.
Band did sound good though. Oh... and the person who DID cause the entire issue... was let back into the gig. Go Figure.

Saw the bandleader last night, he said "I haven't talked to the guy". ??? It's A WEEK LATER and you haven't even talked to the guy?? Bandleader FAIL right there, and one of the reasons I'm no longer a member of that band.

Dinner was delicious! That turned out to be the high point of the night.
We played well for about the first 5 songs, then we came down with an accellerating case of the "too many people playing too many notes too loud too much of the time" disease. This is almost bearable if the place is packed. We had a slim turnout, and we wound up combining the best of the second and third sets and ending early.

We were paid by check, which was only 75% of our usual amount there. The boss had already left, so there was no way to point out this error to him.

The keyboard player's girlfriend helpfully suggested that we learn some Gordon Lightfoot and Jimmy Buffett tunes. I thought she was cool until she said that. :spit: She told me "you sound just like Gordon Lightfoot." And here I'd been trying to sound like Jim Morrison! Dang it!!

But the best was yet to come...
On my way home I got a call from my (day job) boss' girlfriend. It seems that while I was gigging, my boss was getting arrested for driving drunk without a valid license. In her car. :rollno: She's in Arizona and wanted to know if A. I could find out where he was, B. I could pick him up if he was getting released, and C. I could keep him at my house for the night, because she didn't want him at her house.

So I was up til 4:30 making numerous phone calls. Left my number w/cops, but never heard from him. I found out at 11:30 am that he's still in jail. Looks like I have tomorrow off.
Right here I'd just like to say :hmm::atoz::mad::rolleyes::rollno::scowl: and if we had a facepalm smiley, that too.

So all in all, an unusual night.

Forgot to mention my next gigs! Two parties for the Marsh Bros. next weekend, Friday a birthday/engagement party in Silver Spring, and Saturday an early Halloween party out in Middletown, just a few minutes from my home. Should be better crowds than yesterday.

Just ended a 17 day, 16 show, 15 city tour across OR, WA, MT, CO, UT, NV, and CA ending last night with an acoustic show in Eugene. The scene seems to be slow right now as the numbers were pretty low.. then again two of our anchor city shows we had Gogol Bordello playing within a few blocks.
