Well, I did a gig last night. A regular run of the mill clubdate, but a gig no less. What makes this important to me is the back story. I havn't done a gig since July 18th. July 19th, during an MRI, I was not allowed to go home from the hospital. I had some serious spinal surgery on Thursday and Friday of that week( if you consider 2 titanium rods and 14 screws serious) and have been trying to recover ever since. This was all caused by my kidney cancer which seems to have had a field day during July.
I ended up playing keyboard bass for more than half the gig because to compound things, after accepting the gig, 2 mondays ago I had a little incident which fractured 2 bones in my left shoulder. Fingers are fine but positioning the bass comfortably is a major problem. My leader encouraged me to go the keyboard route, even supplying a Roland JV60 for the night. I switched back and forth in the beginning but when it felt like i was aggrivating my shoulder, I just went the keys route for the rest of the night. I nailed it anyway and feel a lot better this morning about everything in general. Still have pain but I feel like I'm worth something again.

Jgsbass, I have seen stands that you lock the bass into and it just supports all the weight you just walk up to it and start playing. just a thought to help you to get off the keys and back on to bass where you belong! As always best of luck. We all are learning from your situation and that if you need to work through some tuff times to keep rocking the bottom it is possible. So for them and myself I thank you. RTS

Played in Dublin last night, our first gig since February, since we've been negotiating with a new record label and writing/recording the last album since then.

It was great fun to get back out gigging, good crowd response, though it was a somewhat moderately sized crowd. Great merch sales for the size of the crowd and the promoter provided some good food, plenty of beer and nice snacks for the evening.

We were playing a support slot last night, because the headlining band are friends of ours, and were launching a new album, so we only played for an hour. Hefty chunk of that was taken up by our penultimate song, which weighs in at 15minutes long. It was the first time we'd played it and it went down well. I was worried that it'd be difficult to hold a crowd's attention for such a long song, but the crowd didn't wane at all through the entire set.

Immense fun and it was nice to not have to get any flights to go play a gig for once!

Last night at Peoria was a huge crowd. I think either one of my monitors is shot or we got a bad channel in the monitor amp.

Bought a used Squier Standard sunburst J bass at the gig for $100 (tired of using my USA Jazz Deluxe at these outside gigs with misters). A few turns of the truss rod and some raising of the pickups and it rocks out with it's cxxk out.

I let the guitar player use my old wireless on guitar and he was like a kid in a candy store. As soon as I unplugged my monitor, my BP went down about 40 points.

Not really a gig as it were ... but a band scramble contest here in St. Louis on Saturday. If your not to familiar with that concept, its seven bands formed at random (vocals, guitar, drums, bass, other) with each position pulled from a hat. Each band gets three weeks to write three original songs and then we all performed this past Saturday at a local venue. I did this last year and my band took first place, this year I pulled the name of a person I had last year and we took first place again.

My country band, Brandy Stills, will be at Addy's in Manassas VA tomorrow and Saturday. That's assuming we aren't all washed down the river & into the sea with all this rain.
We'll be having a sub drummer, our regular drummer begged off to go to Bike Week at the beach. Rotten weather for a motorcycle ride, for sure. :atoz: He'll be wiping rain out of his eyes, like this: :crying:

On my way to Antar's tonight. Got some capt. for the drummer, & some cherry vodka for the guitar player, & some Strongbow cider for me. I had enough of these $50 band tabs that turn into $120 cause the drinks are so expensive. We won't be rebating the venue tonight! I'll try to get some pictures posted by 2am.

No gig last night, but Sedona Jazz Festival is this weekend, and I went over to the after concert jam and sat in with some really good players from Phoenix, as well as some of the best local guys. It was a blast, sounded great, and I was totally surprised when the bass player/leader called me up. I thought I'd just be there to listen to the heavyweights. It was a great vote of confidence from a good friend.

We had a great gig yesterday! My parents' 60th wedding anniversary party. Nice room, about 80 people attending. Our lead guitarist couldn't be there because his daughter's wedding was the same day. So we went semi acoustic. Drummer on Cajon and bongos/tambourine, acoustic guitar through the PA and my EB through 1-15.
The audience loved the '50s and 60's tunes and my daughter wrote a tribute song for her grandma and grandpa that had people toe tapping and crying at the same time!

Our next gig will be back to electric for a foot stomping wine festival out here in the central valley of CA.

Looks like the drummer will have plenty of free time to ride his bike - he's been fired. The sub drummer is the new drummer. I won't bore you with the details - there's no way to tell it where it doesn't sound ridiculous. Let's just call it "artistic differences"... :rollno: The one thing that bugs me is the BL didn't run it by his bass player (me) first. :spit: But it's a done deal now.

Next gigs: this Friday with Brandy Stills at the Leesburg Moose, and Saturday a sub gig with the Grateful Dead band I recently left, On The Bus, at a festival at Buffalo Gap campground out in Capon Springs WV. Peace and love, y'all!

LOL And you carry the kick drum with you because either:
1. Drummer doesn't own his own kick drum, or
2. Drummer's girlfriend's car is too small to carry both of them and a complete drumset.

Gotta be one of the two! :D

Just got a last minute gig in 3 hours at Chili Bombers tonight. Any northside PHX folks got nothing to do tonight should come out and rock out. Very young hip hop crowd. always a lot of fun. no weapons, no white t shirts, no pants on the ground! We start at 10-ish.
