"Check In" here before and after your gigs, Set #2, the sequel!

We're playing a set this afternoon. It's an outdoor thing, raising funds for the local elementary school's music program which just got cut out of the budget. Makes you realize the things we all took for granted growing up. My buddy organized it and told us we'd have an hour to play, so that's what we practiced for. Now we have 90 minutes. Shouldn't be a problem. We're hoping for a few hundred people which would make this our biggest show so far. I'll check in after and let you all know how it went.

Just got back. It was a really fun gig. Not as many people as I hoped for, but there was a good crowd who were into what we were playing. Our families and kids were there too, and they haven't had a chance to hear us play in almost a year. My guitarist's 6 year old son was rocking out in front of the stage while my 4 year old daughter kept coming up to my side to hug my leg and make silly faces at me. I originally wasn't planning on using my electric upright at this gig since I'd been really out of practice on it, but we needed to add more songs at the last minute so I brought it out and managed not to make it sound horrible. It was really hard to tell how things sounded because the stage sound was really bad, but people told me that it sounded great through the PA.

I'm playing with 3 different bands this weekend. Fri with the country band at a private party in Catlett VA, for a dove-hunting group. Hopefully they will leave the guns at home!
Sat a big multi-band Labor Day party. Playing at about dinnertime with the woman whose home it is, then a few hours later, at midnight with On The Bus, a Grateful Dead cover band. That will be a long day, well into Sunday morning! I heard one of the other bands has just cancelled, so maybe we could start a bit earlier...

Played the Minnesota State Fair today. Mostly a vocal gig, but we have Ring of Fire in our rep, so by request of the sound guy, we decide to bring the instruments to do the tune. The wind is pretty gusty, and during the first tune (3 more to go till the Johnny Cash), my Jag gets blown right off her stand--goes kerplop face down on the stage!) Thank goodness that one of our tenors was in the way--he broke the fall a bit. The radio host of the broadcast leaps up and sets the instrument right, but chr**t what a scare!

She stayed in tune though. During the break between songs I ran over to check if anything was busted. Good job, Fender! What a mess, though. I had to sing and snap through an entire verse and a half before I could check the damage.

I managed to find Catlett alright, it's south of Manassas. Gig went well, except we caught just the very edge of Hurricane/TS Earl. 20 minutes of wind and about 2 minutes of rain. We got off light. My music stand blew over a couple of times and the big awning/tent thingie we were under moved over about 2 feet at one point. So no harm done, thank you Mother Nature! :p And no guns were fired. Plenty of free beer and food, and a hilarious drunk old boy from West Virginia hanging around to entertain us while we were packing up.

And it was, didn't leave there til 4:15 am! The first band was good sloppy fun, not a real band, but just thrown together with one rehearsal. We did everything from "Land Down Under" to "Keep On The Sunny Side" to "Once Bitten Twice Shy". I sang a Ray Charles song. Serious variety! The singer is a cool babe, I enjoy the hang very much. At the end of the set we got her two daughters up, they are around 12 and 10 I think, and they sang "Lean On Me". Very sweet.

After that set, I left & went out for some food. Somehow they were throwing an all-afternoon-and-evening party with NO FOOD AVAILABLE! Who thought THAT was a good idea?? Anyway, I found an open pizza/subs place, and returned in time to hear the star of the day, Bill Kirchen. You might remember, from decades ago, the Commander Cody song "Hot Rod Lincoln", with that motivatin' guitar lick. Bill is the guy who did all that great honky-tonk Telecaster pickin' in Cody's band back in the day. He's even better now, and puts on a killer show, with a dee-luxe 20 minute version of "Hot Rod Lincoln" wherein he impersonates everyone from Jimi to Stevie Ray to Chet Atkins to Albert, Freddie and B.B. King (and even Billie Jean King!) and many more. Never fails to make me LOL! They also covered one of my favorite Merle Haggard songs, "Shelly's Winter Love".

(A heads-up for all the Texans, Bill is planning to move to Austin soon. Don't know if the bassist is going, that would be a sweet gig! Keep an eye out for him down there. We'll miss ya Bill!)

After Bill tore 'em up, it was time for my second set of the day/night. Hate to follow him, but had no choice. The crowd was pretty well buzzed by then anyway, so... We did right well cranking out the Dead goodness, and the sound man had the bass nice and loud. Good job Blair! Somebody offered me shrooms during the break, but I passed on that. The party was still rollin' as I packed up & left.

So a splendid time was had! Got to sleep about 5, then up at 9:30 to head out for some driveway resurfacing and deck refinishing. :rolleyes: Oh well, gotta make the $$ when I can!

Next gigs: country band Fri @ Leesburg Moose, Dead band Sat @ Potomac Grill in Rockville.

Had a thing happen last night that was so amazing that I just had to do a mid-weekend post here.

I WON THE 50-50 DRAWING!!! :eek::hyper::cool:
This is very weird, because I never buy a ticket for those drawings. I always figure it's a waste of money. Haven't bought one in at least 5 years, probably longer. But last night I did, for some unknown reason. I said at the time "if God wants to smile on me, I should give Him the chance".

It worked! $85! I felt a lot better about the $1.25 they charged me for that Coke... :D

Nevermind. Gig cancelled. Venue didn't have it's renovations up to code, doors were closed and all upcoming events cancelled. Other mitigating factors as well. At least I got to do a show with them back in the Spring.

We´ve just played a nice Gig for a german Company. That was really Fun. They bought Tickets for the Train, so we could get there without any Stress on that Friday in the Rush Hour. And the Place where we have to play was about 250km away from our Hometown. Our Technical Partner and Mixing Guy went there with his Van and our Backline (Instruments, Amps and so on)

We went to St. Goar, a little Town at the Rhine where the Company has ordered a Boat for their round about 400-500 Employees. We get on the Boat and did the Soundcheck . AT 07:30pm the Boat took of and went up the Rhine and had some Time to relax in the Sun, have some Drinks and a nice Meal. We´ve played at 09:30pm - 0:00 then, the Boat arrived in Wiesbaden, another german City. Was really Fun to play.

The Company has ordered some Hotel Rooms for us and we checked in and then we went to a Club where the Boss is an old Schoolmate from our Guitarist. He was happy to see him and us and he brought us all the Drinks on the House (mostly Mojitos)

Next Morning, we´ve had a nice Breakfast and went home by Train. Ah yes... at least everyone of us gets 475,- Eur., wich is about 620,- US Dollar :D

Played at Marjerle's (pronounced "marley's") annerversary last night.

We sent a signalout to the DJ's big Peaveys underneath our yamahas. sounded good.
They had some sidelights set up. i liked them. Gave good light and looks like an easy set up. Thinking of buying 4 par cans and 2 stands.

Okay We played a township fest. this Sat everything went well we had great weather and the event people were great. The sound man was the same guy as last year so we knew we were going to sound fantastic and we did! We were asked back for next year as soon as we left the stage. We are rocking in a new club this Sat and I will hit back next week RTS

Come on guys, let's keep this thread alive!!

Gig'd tonight in Mesa. Worked the new X2 tonight. Not too bad. Play'd the whole second set with the A string a smidge sharp. sounded "wonderful." Made the third set sound great when I tuned it down. I thought it was some frequency weirdness at first. Still getting used to the whole wireless rig.

Tomorrow night in Peoria.

We, Link Removed are your "just-over-50-year-old-performers" classic rock cover band with pretty good vocals added in. All of us have played and have sung in one form or another since high school, and a couple of us were even music majors in college for a while.

So we have this gig tonight at the Spirit Mountian Casino just out of town about 45 mintues, which is a pretty big deal here in the Salem area. We are proud to perform on the main events stage (Kenny Loggins was there last night - even got go in and watch stage setup yesterday) for a great cause supporting the Oregon chapter of the Paralyzed Veterans of America. They are really spoiling us - well, we think we're being spoiled. Dinner and rooms on the house! This will definately be one to talk about. Even our private paprazzi is coming to take pics so we can tell our grandchildren someday!
