"Check In" here before and after your gigs this weekend!

Well, it was a productive weekend, 6 gigs in 3 days. The Arts & Crafts festival gigs (all during the day, two 1 hour sets each) were fun, but the weather was very hot. At least we didn't play in the sun. Sat nite party gig lots of fun, beautiful custom home, lots of eats & drinks, good pay, and some hot rich woman drinking wine.

This week:

6/26 Gruet Grille, 6-9
6/29 Marriott Courtyard Hotel, 6-9
6/30 wedding in Santa Fe, 6-10

My band is playing our first gig tonight at a fairly well known band venue / pub. We were originally supposed to be opening for 2 other bands, but then one cancelled because it wasn't ready and was replaced by another band made of most of the members of the other (like how ready can these guys actually be??!) .. then they added a warm-up act of thrown together musicians to open for us..

Now the headliner has just pulled out of the show, so suddenly we are the second band playing, and the only band, from what we can tell, that is actually serious and prepared.. should be an interesting show, though I wish we had more than a 30 minute set prepared now..

Friday at the Marriott was great, big crowd and the band sounded as good as ever. Sat late afternoon wedding gig, not too many folks, low energy, could have been better.

Saturday night we played an early 4th of July at a campground in the Front Royal VA area. Lots of kids and parents, fireworks & sparklers, lots of folding chairs straining to hold their occupants. The PA croaked temporarily at the start, but was soon fixed. We hadn't played since the 16th, so it was good to get back in the saddle. Last set was rockin'! We ended with the Stones medley, then La Grange. They booked us for next year.
One unusual thing - a young lady approached me during the break and said she was the daughter of the bandleader from my last band. (This was the guy who, after 6 years, fired me by phone 24 hours before the second weekend of a 2-weekend gig. He couldn't have waited til the second weekend was over? Whatever, he actually did me a favor. He freed me to join my current band, a better one, that I've been with for the last 7 years.) She said he was there, in another area of the campground, and he had an injured foot, so he couldn't walk down to see us. But he could certainly hear! I hope he was impressed.

Next up: Walkersville carnival Saturday, Thurmont carnival Monday. Corn dogs, here I come! Break out the mustard!

Great weekend. Played two shows locally for a thing called "What you Got? Fest" which is a festival put on by a bunch of different venues throughout Olympia to bring attention to youth media.

The proceeds go to trying to open a stable, safe, and consistent place for youth to do arts and music.

We played Sylvester Park, which was a great gig. Played through my new (to me) Berg NV610 and a Bassman 135. Perfect sound, levels were great and everyone was on.

Then later that night, we played the Capital Theater (bands like Nirvana, Ben Kweller, Sonic Youth, Beck, Elliott Smith, etc have played there). Great sound (massive PA) and overall a very smoooooth couple of shows.

From the shows we have a guy willing to record us in his studio for free because he dug our sound, a fan who lives in R.I. and goes to Brown, and a great bunch of contacts.

Playing a "Scooter Rally" type event in the centre of Birmingham tonight, should be interesting as it will be the first gig of this type for us in several years. Looking forward to it personally as it will give us the chance to do stuff we wouldn't normally, like the odd Small Faces or Kinks B side. Dare say the place will be full of forty-plus ex-Mod Revival boys with the Fred Perry's bulging at the seams!:)
We're doing an hour in the middle between the DJ's, not sure what their music policy will be, probably mostly Northern Soul- I'll report back tomorrow or in the next couple of days. See Y'all!;)

Last night a small wedding. The guitar player had worked with me on an industrial in Florida 20 years ago. He reminded me of a story from that gig. The singer was a bit of a prima dona and she didn't have a lot of club date experience.She was complaining about something inconsequential. She then says " I've been doing this for 3 years" and I said " I've had gigs longer than that".

No gigs this weekend :( The rest of the Band are at T in the Park. I cant afford it :bawl:

Playing at a darts night next week though. We better be good if half the crowd are carrying arrows!

We played a 4th of July celebration on Tuesday, at the local resort.......they float a stage on the lake, and we play from there, with the "dancing water" fountain show on our breaks, and fireworks at the end. It's a really nice crowd, numbering well into the thousands, and gets the band a lot of exposure, especially to some folks who might not otherwise show up at a club gig, etc.

This weekend is the first open weekend I've had since the 3rd week of April, and I'm looking forward to it, because it's also my last open weekend until the 2nd week of August. In fact, I've got 10 more gigs to go this month, so we'll be pretty busy!

Slightly disappointing as the crowd were a bit quiet, but then again I don't suppose we were the main attraction, and we did get some nice compliments, not least from the promoter/DJ himself. They seemed to go for the Soul and Motown type numbers rather than the Who, Kinks and Small Faces ones.

Here's a good one for ya. Saturday night at our bar gig, end of the second set. We have a couple of percussion stands in front of the stage, both with cowbells, for audience participation in several cowbell songs we play. This somewhat overweight, drunk guy is playing along when he drops a drumstick. He falls over backward trying to pick it up, and nobody comes over to help him. When he finally gets up, his backside to us, I look down and see the biggest butt crack ever! I've seen a few appliance repairmen in my day, but this takes the cake. The crowd didn't see his crack, but they saw the look on mine and the frontman's face, and started laughing.

Song ended, and I said my favorite line, "Say no to crack", to another round of laughter.

He was oblivious to all this hilarity, and was escorted out shortly thereafter.

Biggest gig of the year for me this weekend.....Invalid Link Removed........check it out. Huge country music festival, 4 days worth of music and party. We play on Saturday afternoon, right in the middle of it all.

We played 2 "Kick-off Parties" at the concert site on Tuesday and Wednesday, for all of the early arrivals (people camp out there, start pouring into town on Sunday, and the main show starts on Thursday.) The kick off parties were a blast, just a huge rockin' outdoor party for a couple thousand folks......
