"Check In" here before and after your gigs this weekend!

Had a really good gig Saturday night at a local bar. Lots of folks showed up and for the most part the gig went over well. We had a couple miscues on some newer songs, but nothing was a trainwreck. The revamped second set was a hit, lots of danceable rockers in there and the floor was packed. We played from 9:30 to 1:30 and only took two 15 minute breaks. We actually ran out of time and had to scrap a couple tunes at the end of the night.

We did one long set, 19 songs, 100 minutes. I was allowed to sing lead on one song, the final big number to close the show, ZZ Top's "La Grange". Two other songs of mine were low on the list, and were cut as we were running overtime. :rolleyes: Meanwhile, the soundman sang 6 or 7 tunes.
I'm getting real tired of that happening, and tired of having to complain about it repeatedly to the bandleader.

To top it off, on Saturday, the BL proudly presented me with a CD copy of Thursday's show! I'm thinking "gee, that setlist was a slap in the face! What about a copy of any of the many shows where I sang MORE THAN ONE song? The ones I've asked you for?"
So yeah, thanks a bunch. I made lots of mistakes in Saturday's show, still POed from Thurs. Very unprofessional of me, I know.

I was playing in a covers rock band that I wasn't completly thrilled with. I gave my notice back in March (as did the drummer) and played one last show with them. They re-configured the band and I went off to do my projects.

Shortly after the last show, I get a call from the guitarist of the cover band. He says there is a show booked for June 1st and he dosen't believe the new line-up will be ready in time for the gig. So he invites my band to play the first set.

We are a sax/piano/bass/drums quartet that currently plays Real Book songs.

Well, we are playing the gig. I am a bit nervous as to how a sports bar type audience is going to receive us.

Then 2 weeks after that call, the guitarist calls me again and says the bass player they got to replace me walked out on the band, and they need me to play the last 2 sets with the cover band.

On top of that, my fiancee is finding out if she got a job she interviewed for and its my best friend's birthday.

Get ready for an evening of Wayne Shorter and Stone Temple Pilots.

The evening actually went pretty well! The jazz group had a good crowd and even the rock regulars seemed to dig us. I guess the guitarist from the covers/rock band didn't tell anybody at the venue that there would be 2 bands. He was a little upset but was impressed with our band. The sound-guy even said they should have us back. We got lots of compliments afterward.

The rock band was actually kind of enjoyable to play in for once. Sine they got the new line-up, some of the songs I hated were tossed out and some that I actually like were added. I'm playing a party with them in a couple of weeks.

Thursday: mixed three solo acoustic guitar acts, then a pretty loud four piece with a Jim Morrison sound alike lead singer. Almost no soundcheck for the 4 piece, and none for anyone else. Typical for this 300 seat club, I'm used to it. Good turnout, sound was decent for the most part, and I actually got home pretty early, 2AM or so.

Friday: sub gig with some old bandmates, a store opening thingie with lots of people coming and going, since it was part of an artwalk type event that happens on the first Friday of every month in Hood River. Mostly non-standard jazz, so no charts, or bad ones at best. I wrote thirteen new charts (for free), rehearsed twice (for free) and played for free too. Mostly because I owed the shop owner a little payback for past favors, but I've also done a few decent paying gigs with this band and might as well keep a hand in, just in case. Went fine, and the band enjoyed having a bassist who's willing to solo on anything, any time.

Saturday: five hour Elks Club gig, Class of '57 high school reunion. They couldn't get a 50's band, so they asked my old school jazz group to throw some tunes in that'd at least be close. We actually came up with two sets (out of 5) that worked for 'em as 50's-identified, with the slow dance ones working not as well as the fast swing stuff...go figure. We made good tips, plus extra for playing the 5th set.

Sunday: the incredible shrinking gig. Fairly big festival with a large tent and a killer sound system. Same group as Saturday night, and for both gigs we used a drummer, which we rarely do. Over the last month our set went from 2 to hours to 1.5, to 1, and eventually to 45 minutes including setup. The act before us was a total snoozer, so I suggested we start with our usual show closer to kick some energy up. Worked well, we got a great crowd reaction right off and the whole set was pretty happening. The sound guy has mixed us plenty and loves jazz, so we got some extra love on that account too. Man, I love playing EUB through 4 big EAW subs!:bassist:

Now I have a month off, at least theoretically. I'll likely go sit in with two or three bands though, at the least. Time to start recording some stuff too, I guess.:cool:

Tuesday went well, but it's a tough night to get folks out around here.

Friday at Marcellos Chop House.

The weekend of 16/17 will be the first gig free weekend for me since January (excluding my Birthday weekend in Feb.). I love to play, but I am so looking forward to a Saturday and Sunday to do whatever I want...

Edit: Picked up Saturday night at Marcellos again, I guess they had a cancellation. I'm already there tonight, so I can leave my rig!

Well, I'm headin' out.........one of our "regular" club gigs tonite, usually a rockin' little place that's lots of fun. Not very big, not very fancy, just lots of folks suckin' down brews and partying like crazy to get the weekend started..........should be fun!

Saturday our steady gig in Coral Springs
Sunday a new bar in West Palm, a freebe for a bike club and bar owner
Tuesday a bar gig in Lake Worth
Friday the other steady gig in Deerfield Beach.

Not my normal week, should be a lot of fun.

Played a 1 hour and 15 minute set at a local festival today. God it was hot and humid. My fretting hand was so wet with sweat that I kept sliding off the notes on the fretboard. The sound guy's monitors were clipping so much that one them actually started smoking. All in all, we played pretty good, considering the crap we had to deal with......:( :hmm:

Well, it was an excellent night on Friday, until about 15 minutes before the end of the last set, when a gal came out the door of the casino room behind the band, fell, and knocked one of the guitarist's Dr. Z amps over, hit the floor face first. We shut it down for the night. Bummer.

What do you do in a situation like that? He didn't want to fire up the nearly new and very expensive amp without having a chance to check it out carefully to avoid doing any additional damage. Can't say I blame him.

Saturday,we headlined at an outdoor festival. Great PA company, and a nice crowd. The band played another tight 90 minute set.

Hey, the gig went great, we rocked Chisholm Mn., even though the Iron Range Blast got cx'd at the last minute Good crowd, lots of women. They even danced to Highway Star! Even the Mayor liked us!:hyper:

Busy days for the rest of the week. Tomorrow night, a firemen's carnival in Fairplay, MD. Fri night it's the Charles Town WV Moose lodge. Sat a wedding in Carlisle PA (I love weddings!). Sunday, hang with the family for Father's Day at my brother's house. Cookout & swimming pool yay!
