It was in fact a general image search on cheese bass that led me here to this forum but a few months ago.

In honor of this forum. In honor of Cheese bass spirit. In honor of the different. In honor of experimentation just to see and to no particular ends, I present "Cheese Bass II"

Specs:
$90 ebay beater

Scalloped neck, frets 1-4 and 12-24. Achieved by pressing the side of a drill-bit sanding barrel to the fret board. The wood powdered unlike any wood I've ever known. Resin infused?

Blue and green crayon mold

Ibanez SR300 tuners + one stock

DR neon yellow strings

Stock bridge custom drilled and saddles by local luthier and maestro tech, Lucio of Marina Music in Culver City.

43mm nut

One gold tooth. Currently three through-body strings, but will be going all five when I get access to my drill press later this week.

15mm avg strings at the bridge.

Need more holes in butt to fill with melted lead to re-balance the neck.

Sounds just like it did before, but with more holes in the body.

I think it’s incredibly creative and I love the crayon “mould.” And I agree about the hand-hold… it’s what I loved the most about those old Ibanez Jems from the 90s.

Is there a preamp in there?

Yes, mould.

No pre-amp. Passive.
All 4 pots replaced with same 500k, but with center detente.
Knobs are Dean Edge 4 donors
Bone nut
Body cut with makita jigsaw angled extreme and followed my sharpie guidelines

The nut and saddle are the only not-me work done. Lucio also checked my wiring and fixed a fault.

Direct costs
$90 Bass
$70 Paint
$30 Strings
$45 Nut
$45 Saddle work
~$160 in mods on $280 total for a unique 5-string, primarily designed for the nut and 15mm bridge.

There were some lost costs down blind alleys, but that's prototyping for you. Call it $350 total for a 15mm 5-string, (decorative aesthetic aside).

The scallops are something I always wondered about. I kept the middle frets so to more easily hit the common notes if I didn't like the scallops. Preliminary noodling suggests possible edge-case uses. A novelty that does no harm more than anything.

Body paint. I could have kept going, but it came time for pencils down, papers over. Assignment was done enough. There are still more things I could do. Maybe next time. If I really dig the string spacing, I would consider a proper bass for the higher innate qualities.

I've had it back from the shop not 30hrs.as yet. Work took a few weeks longer than I wanted as the yellow paint was very hot and if I applied a second coat too soon, even over 24hrs later, the finish would ripple enough to require a refinish. Just as well as that built up the body and made sanding easier..

And I agree about the hand-hold… it’s what I loved the most about those old Ibanez Jems from the 90s.

Cheese 1 was done in ~1990 and the handle resulted from several drill holes close together enough to make single handle on it. I liked it so much I refined the design for Cheese 2. I would not do it to any other guitar I liked -I don't think.

I had no idea handles were done by anyone much less commercially until just now. And from Ibanez which I've been a SDGR fan of since my first around 1998. I wasn't a Steve Vai fan or that general orbit, so was never exposed even to Ibanez until I walked into a Sam Ash intent on buying a Yamaha. I only learned Ibanez is Japanese in these past months! lolz.)

I chose this beater design of several on ebay for the reminiscent Ibanez look, even though it's really more of a dean headstock cut.

I will likely take a dremel to the finalize scallops at some point down the road.

Cheers! Ooh, weed eater bass strings! Pianosaurus played toy instruments back in the '90's. Maybe it's time for the garage bands to start using garage implements in their music!

I find your end result to be a bit grating. Clearly, you've created a muenster. But... it looks like you could play a bunch of R&Brie with it. You could name that model the Soul Swisster. I also like that even with the weird comments here, you're still a gouda sport.
