Cherry neck

is cherry strong enough for a neck? I got a curly cherry board but don't wanna laminate it into a neck unless It'll work.

cherry is generally suited more for body than neck, but can be used in combination with more suitable neck woods

I don't see why not since I have seen some builders using Ash for neck woods.

If it's North American Cherry I would laminate it with wenge and maple. If it's South American Cherry (Jatoba) your fine by itself. But I prefer 5 piece necks.

flat sawn? Quater sawn? How tight is the grain?

it's flat sawn, but I plan to rip it into lengths and face glue them to orient the grain right. It isn't here right now, so I can't give a grain description without guessing.

tjclem is a good source for this, as he has built a couple necks with cherry as I remember

The first neck I made was five piece [seven on the head] cherry with 1/8" padauk stringers, I don't think I had to adjust the truss rod once on it since I set it up it 7 years ago.

Cherry is a bit soft for my taste but it works, as long as you get straight grained, no crack, and generally good quality pieces.
