Chinese Bass!

Another apparent scam on TradeTang! (They're really not very good at this)
Check out this Rickenbacker 4005 (new!) they have listed:
Invalid Link Removed

then google Rick 4005, and without looking too hard, you will find the same photos (wear area on back is identical!)

So this is the new technique; find a valuable vintage guitar, post it on Chinese E Bay, "sell" several of them before you get caught, then after DH or TradeTang terminates your account, start up a new one in a different name! $300 a pop! No guitar exists.

Yes this site uses photos of genuine Ricks. Avoid these sellers, also check their feedback, less than 100% should fire off the warning signal to avoid them. :-)

why does everyone pick on the Chinese copies and not the other countries who also do it?

oh, well maybe it is ok then for everyone to buy Korean and Indian copies of whatever take the thing out of the box and toss a Fender Sticker on it because for some reason it MUST say Fender on it so from 20 feet away your audience thinks your cool?

OH how dumb of me, never mind ---- it is perfectly ok to throw a Fender sticker on a Squier and pimp it like it's the real deal as hundreds of TB members do it yearly...forgive my ignorance.

The only thing that makes me mad about some of the Chinese Fakes is that they DO try to palm it off AS the real deal WITH a fake sticker on them. Nothing else about them is so bad that your gonna be disappointed about it.

and Trade-Tang and DHGate are the 2 worst scam sites on the whole internet. As an GOOD example, the Rics in my pictures were NOT bought thru either of those, but WERE from a Chinese seller but if you notice, nowhere does it say RIC/USA or anything else that would make you "think" it was the real thing.

god you talk crap! all of the basses had Rick, USA nameplates. I turfed those. All basses bought from Tradetang

Counterfeit or not, Rondo is still stealing sales from fender/squire. Not to put you down but just playing devils advocate. Plus sub 200 dollar rics and rays are appealing!

Wrong, rondo isn't stealing anything...if you are so worried about fender/squier sales, you should be protesting the "classifieds"...that's where fender profits get hit. Why buy new from fender if you can wait for whatever you want to pop up in the classifieds for probably a third the price and in just as good of condition?
All those playing legit fenders have not necessarily done anything for the fender company...just pointing that out ;)

I agree that Rondo isn't stealing as it's not passing itself off as something it's not. This company in the OP is doing just that, they are masquerading as Fender (name, logo and all!) when they clearly have no affiliation whatsoever. On Rondo's stuff it says Fender no where on them.
Now that being said I'm not the Karma Police by any stretch of the imagination as you are free to buy with your dollars what you wish but I think Rondo and these guys are in two different
categories.

oh so I come in here and show these people your lovely basses that at least ONE seller wasn't out to rip people off ( as you scolded me in the other thread about generalizing ), and you wanna start **** again?

well I'm done.

gang do what you will, a word of warning from me? ...go get ripped off, go find the one and only seller that actually sold RICK4001S his lovely units and buy your fake-en-fenders or whatever. It's not my money so good luck.

for those who's morals are so high that you would never buy a blatant copy and get pissed at people who do -- fine enjoy what you buy because it is ultimately up to you all what you want to keep in your house.

amimbari you started all the bad mouthing.

Do not post if you don't post the truth! You are not doing anyone any favors doing this!

you reap what you sow!

I do not like phonies.....but let me relay a recent story:

Our guitar player (quite accomplished) plays both Les Pauls and Fenders. He recently bought a Chinese "Gold Top" les paul copy - because he doesn't like taking his REAL Gold Top to gigs....and I don't blame him at all.

He brings it to rehearsal and I swear to you that the rest of us could "barely" tell the difference....he switched out the crap tuners and pups and in all honesty, it looks, plays and sounds like a $5,000 Gibson. True, if you really look with a discerning eye, you can see differences, but to the average patron of the places we play - never happen.

Again, I DO NOT endorse these copies - and I absolutely would NEVER play one - but the workmanship (on at least the one he bought) wasn't bad.

Save your money, though and buy the real deal :D

Call me crazy, but I think threads like these should be against talkbass rules. It's illegal to do what these companies do, yet they get away with it for various reasons. These threads wind up being advertisement for illegal and immoral activity. Not judging anyone who's buying them, I myself have been interested, but it just seems totally wrong for a forum with such high standards.

I've wondered about this, too. Having a discussion about purchasing counterfeit goods from China seems a bit sketchy, to say the least.

I can understand small shops on the Pacific rim choosing to build copies of name-brand western products, in order to demonstrate their capabilities. A good Fender copy and a couple of good boutique copies make great calling cards for a small manufacturer looking to get into the OEM market as a manufacturing subcontractor. A lot of the Japanese, Korean, Taiwanese and Indonesian companies that build our favourite high-quality off-shore products got their start this way.

What I can't abide, is when these companies decide to simply go into the counterfeiting business, instead of taking the high road, like Cortech and numerous other businesses before them.

In case anyone thinks that this is a "victimless crime", there's a video on YouTube where a boutique builder (Jens Ritter, if I remember correctly), takes on a rep from one of these clone shops at NAMM.

You don't have to be a genius to see who is the injured party, and who is the rip-off artist.

I agree with Joe Nerve. The moderators should shut this thread down.

I'm glad you said that Joe. I agree.

You're not crazy, but I'd like to think that maybe someone who was actually considering buying one of those abominations might read something here that changes their mind. I nearly bought an SX until my (adult) son said "maybe if you buy that, the 10 year old that wound the pups will get a meal after his 16 hour shift". I couldn't buy it.

I'm pretty sure Dillion(?) and other copy manufacturers pay a fee of some kind (not much though) and they definitely DON'T put Gibson on the headstock. They aren't trying to fool anyone.

Anyone who wants to buy one, go ahead. I can't and won't.
