You find a wizard in a cave. He says that he will cast a spell on any single bass you bring him and from that point on you will be able to change one of the following features on that bass with your mind. They can be switched back and forth on the fly.

Fretted/Fretless - Pretty simple, nothing changes but the frets appear / disappear. If you want different finishes on the fretboard, you can have them. (Epoxy on the fretless, etc.)

Short scale/Long scale - Changes between any two scale lengths you choose.

String count - Can change between a 4 and a 15, a 5 and a 6 or whatever else you desire. Body shape and neck transform as well to accommodate the extra strings.

String Type - Can change between any two sets of strings. Roundwounds/Flatwounds/Whateverwounds, etc.

Tuning - Can change between any two tunings. Standard/Piccolo, etc. Strings, nut, truss rod and bridge adjust if needed.

Pickup Configuration - Change from any two. Such as double humbuckers to a P/J.

Fretboard Extension - You can toggle between your standard fretboard and a 3 octave fretboard. The body will change to accommodate this with a cutaway.

Color - Can instantly change between any two colors/finishes you'd like.

Solidbody/Semihollow - Self explanitory.

What bass do you bring him and what option do you choose?

And then I want a three-position switch that will...

I went color/finish. I'd bring him my T40 and go from Tobacco burst/rosewood fretboard to black body/ rosewood fretboard but with a black matching headstock. My T40 is already burst but with a maple neck so the one isn't that much of a stretch anyway.

Fretted / fretless for me to. Although being able to dramatically change the pick-up config would open up a new world of tone too!

But if met a wizard in a cave, I'd be asking for a truckload of cash and I'd get multiple fully customised basses like an Alembic etc. (And do a mod I'm hanging out to try on my Rickenbacker!) And buy a bigger house to fit all the new basses in, and a four-speed manual (top-loader), 351 ci XB Panelvan with a 9" diff to carry everything around in. The Aussies will understand this last request a bit better!

I saw another video of a bass similar to that one. Actually it may have been that one but in the other video it looked a lot like a Fodera. I voted fretted/fretless also. I wonder if that bass has any neck dive or weight issues.

Edit: Ok, after going to the mikey guitar website I saw the video that I sw before so it was the a mikey bass. Great idea but I'm suprised no one else has come up with the same idea. I could totally see Michael Manring playing one of those.

no brainer based on the choices....fretted/fretless. there actually was a guy that i met at a summer namm in 2002 or 2003 (maybe a musik messe?) who had a bass with this feature. the fretboards snapped on the neck. it was pretty cool, but i think it required the removal of the strings or even removing the neck? wonder whatever happened with that? anyone? bueller?

if i had my preference though, i'd really love to have more than one preamp in the bass. that i can toggle between or even blend together. i'd also love to see that tuning mechanism in the robot guitar - [Invalid or Expired Link Removed] come to the bass universe...or to have the input jack double as a headphone amp...that'd be swell.
