Chop Shop: Bronco Edition

Yep - it's squared like some of the classic Teles to make a jack plate (or cup) sit flush.

Good eye.

:)

I noticed it too - and it does look deliberate on inspection, but it breaks up the flow of that curve... I'da voted for curvy. But then, it's not my build. :D

I really dig that inset rout -- takes it out of the range of just-anudda-Tele and makes it pop. Nice.

While I was doing the contour I was thinking "if I do another of these, I'll cut the body with the curve, do the contours, and then just put a flat spot on the center section of the side only".... that way the contour stays nice all the way around, but I still have the advantage of the flat spot for the jack.

Still looks really great - that F hole and edging added a really class touch. And that flat spot will make more visual sense with a cable plugged in.

So far I'm pretty happy with it. It should be a really cool bass when it is done. I'm heading out of town on Saturday for a week, so I'm gonna try to get it "closer" to finished, but I'm sure a lot of it will have to wait till I get back...and decide on things like the pickups, bridge, and control layout.

No idea what will become of it. Right now it's a paperweight.

:)

There are worse things than having a paperweight that's overkill in every single way.

Joking aside, if you wanted to you could probably make a good albeit extremely short scale (I'm guessing) dulcimer out of the body.

I'm having a hard time imagining it as anything other than scrap wood but I'm thinking you'll prove me wrong!

Any idea if a single coil P bass pickup will fit in at the bridge of a Bronco without putting it at an angle? Will the polepieces line up? I keep seeing Strat pickups at the bridge on short-scale basses.

Doesn't quite line up...the pole pieces are a bit wider than the string settings on the stock bridge.

If you were to install a bridge that would accept the four threaded Fender saddles, I think you could manually offset the strings enough to make them line up. You need to move the E and G out about 1/8" on each side.

Edit: if you don't want to worry about pole pieces and want to add a bass pickup, using a pickup with a rail design rather than pole pieces is the natural answer. I've used a Hot Rails pickup in the Bronco and it's pretty nice, too.

Hey, has anyone thought about just putting a humbucker in this bass? There's plenty of room under the PG.
Yup, I have. The rail humbucker that Praxist is using on his P-Rick build was previously in my Bronco project. I decided to go an entirely different route though and it came back out. I cut a new hole in the pickguard to fit the humbucker right on centre with the single coil hole. I even used the same mounting holes for the adjustment screws. The humbucker made it sound quite a bit more like a p-bass but still with clear highs...
