I actually replaced the Chromes WITH SIT Nickels to get rid of that annoying clack. Success! The SIT's are smooth and punchy, Chromes were dull and clacky. Sorry, I'll make sure to stay off your lawn

Mongo 2 explained a couple of posts before where the your "clack" was coming from. You have it with SITs also but the rounds brighter tone covers it up, chromes wont. Thanks, for staying off the lawn BTW.

It is an interesting bean, too. I love vanilla. Too bad it's considered kind of like no flavor. Big mistake.

Personally, I put a set of sadowsky flats on my Regenerate 5-string '51 TeleP last night and thusfar I really like them. Obviously more tension than the Sunbeams I had on it, but I'm flexible tension wise. I usually keep Chromes on my 4-string P-bass, Sunbeams on my HH Schecter Studio5, and now it seems as though Sadowsky's may have found a home on my 2-week old custom RGW bass.

Initially the Sadowsky's had more edge than I expected, but that's already calmed down after a few hours playing and being on the bass overnight.

I'll have to disagree there, since no other strings really have that Chrome clack.

WOW...what a waste of money...could of sold them on here or another site. Chromes are not cheap. Old or not its not the strings ...its you. But you will never believe us so ..why bother

Ok, We had some fun but really the thought of you getting clack on chromes highy smacks of very poor technique so quit blaming the chromes. I have recorded allot of tracks in the last 6 months in studio and do you think my band, the producer or myself would allow clacking strings in the mix...sorry ...no its not the strings.

I was a long time round wound player and played the very same set you just replaced your chromes with, as i said before ...made in my city. When i went to flats due to my music style and chasing that old school P bass tone i loved growing up "clack" as you put it was never in the sound. I can understand some on saying 'Dull", "quiet" and not having the brightness of rounds but clack on chromes? Thats you not having proper setup and or lousy technique.

Chromes and flats wont be going anywhere soon and in fact where the first and still are here, stronger than ever. You dont have to be old to play flats and you are never to old to learn

I'm telling you guys, Chromes have more top end than any other flats. Trust me.

No they do not, far from it.

A new set of Roto flats has piles more, but it dies down.
A set of TI's, new or old, has quite a bit more.
Labellas(not the Jamerson set), have a comparable top end, maybe a little more.

I wouldn't exactly call it 'tone'. I'd call it a 'dull thud'. You can't honestly believe that McCartney had 'tone'. That's like saying vanilla is an exciting flavor.

I agree with this statement. A dull thud accurately describes it for me as well.

However, saying you cant get a good tone out of flats is a matter of perception I guess. Give a listen to Iron Maiden, you cant say the bass dont have great tone there.

I wanted to try flats a few years ago and bought a set of Fenders. Like you said before, I couldnt get them off and into the trash quick enough. A dull thud is exactly what it was.

A few month later I decided to try again. I bought a set of Rotosound SH77's (Steve Harris sig) and got the best sound out of my bass that I had ever heard. I found those strings to be a little big for my taste, so I bought a set of Roto RS77's. I've used them ever since. These are bright flats. You wouldnt know they were flats just by listening. I have to keep them clean though, otherwise they start sounding like a dull thud.
