Chunk's Octavius Squeezer: "Sound Clips & Settings Thread"

I got mine a while back but haven't invested anywhere near enough time in it yet. I've just been using the defualt settings and having a bit of fun with them, but reading this thread is definately motivating me to start playing some more with it and tweaking it.

In the final section of the manual there's an explanation of each parameter, in a sensible sort of order, and it explains what you need to do in terms of setting up the mixers and stuff to get different parts of the pedal working how you want. If you sit down with the pedal and tweak as you read, you'll get the hang of it in a couple of hours.

It still takes a long time to set up a sound, but there aren't nearly as many head-scratching periods as you'd expect. It makes sense.

I've also gotta update the firmware as have had it freeze a few times so glad to hear it can fixed simple.

FYI with the latest firmware mine still hangs occasionally, I get a crash every couple of hours on average and I haven't noticed anything specific that causes it.

Thanks Kevteop!

Yes I was a bit daunted by the 60 odd page manual I downloaded but I'll follow your advice and head toward the end and fiddle whilst I read.

I wouldn't say the freezing is a big thing on my unit. It seems to be if you leave it sitting for quite some time without clicking something and keeping it active, this is when it happens most. I've plugged it in whilst I've been rehearsing with my band with the intention of having a fiddle when we have a break. You step on the effect selector and nothing happens. So I just pull out my A/C adaptor plug and reinsert and the pedal reboots itself. Definately wouldn't want this to happen during a gig though should I start really using some sounds in some new tracks.
It's only happened a few times to me so far.

A couple of things Ive noticed while learning the OS:

1. It loves my Stingray but my ibanez btb not so much. I believe both have passive pups and active electronics. I have the hardest time getting the proper adjustments on the iby. Once i get get it worked out, will I have to switch sens settings when I switch guitars during a performance?

2. I always ran my OS before my compressor and thought Id try switching it up and running the compressor first. Once I did that, some of the effects were rendered useless. Well what I mean is on some of the effects, the harder you play, the crazier/more intense the effect gets(not sure what thats techincally called). The compressor seemed to stop that from happening. I didnt have too much squish on it either, maybe 55%.

3. IF you run your OS with the effect gobstopper(1st one) on, into a boss bass overdrive pedal, you will get one of the SICKEST sounds evar. Also sounds dope with the thin and crispy effect. Looking into buying some recording gear with the tax return, then Ill post clips. Anybody know of a decent simple setup for recording onto a PC? Id probably need something that comes with software.

4. The OS really does get easier to navigate with time. When I first got it I was super-hyped to play with it. I spent hours with it, ate breakfast with it, played PS3 with it,even slept with it once lol. But going through the manual day after day overloaded my brain. I got sick of reading it and ultimately stopped. Well now Im back to reading the manual and experimenting with the parameters. Im in love again with da OS again. And the fact that it will soon support pedals and Chunk is releasing more effects for it, makes me even more hyped. Ugh. This thing is just too dope.

Wow, I don't think this is in the manual...

I think... (I'm not sure!) I just created a feedback loop inside the OS and then stepped the pitch using the randomiser on the rhythm machine that you're supposed to use to step the filter. Classic B-movie computer noise.

I'm going to record it now. :D

Edit: Whoops - I started mixing in the suboctaves from my OC-2 and the -2 Oct caused some of the higher notes to overdrive my preamp once I increased the potential modulation depth up to a few octaves, so watch for spikes from about 20 seconds onwards. Towards the end of the clip I introduce just a tiny bit of LFO modulation along with the randomised beat-locked sweep which makes it go all out of tune and wibbly.

If anyone else wants to have a go, here's the important settings:

Note: Before this will make any noise you have to give it some input, so touch the end of your input jack or something once you've set up the params and it will kick off.

Turn on the Rhythm Machine (Enter menu, Scroll to Rhythm, Select "Tap"). The option to turn it off again is right next to Tap - "Stop".

Output Src: LPF
Output Db: 0
Premix Src: Fuzz
Premix Db: 0
Postmix Src: Fuzz
Postmix Db: 0

Fuzz src: LPF
Fuzz drv db: 0
Gate mode: off

VCF Mode: Stat
VCF Law: exp (lin gives really high pitch)
VCF Peak: To taste, but full (31) sounds best to me.
VCF Ini Frq: I used 100, but anything in the audio range works. The higher you go, the higher your appegio is pitched.

LFO Rate: 0

Beat Rate: 1/16 or 1/8
Beat wave: rand
Beat depth: 0 is a constant tone at the frequency set with "VCF Ini Frq", each increment increases the range available to each step. (if you don't switch on the rhythm machine, you can use this param to play notes by turning the param knob)

Have fun! :)

P.S. Set LFO Rate and LFO Ini Dpth to small values (1 or 2) to make the pitches bend, sounds less digital, more deranged).

Sounds nice. Simulated sample&hold!

Crazy stuff Kev!

How are you liking the Squeezer so far?

It's great sound-wise, I think it's going to be able to cover all the bases I hoped for and more (probably much more). Wish the VCO output was a bit more predictable but that's pitch tracking for you. Other than that I'm getting along very well with it, and it gets along with my other pedals well too, except the Mammoth, but the Mammoth's anti-social.

I know how to work everything now, I just need lots of time to create sounds. Finding lots of time is of course the hard part.

Still getting the occasional crash though. Twice I've left it alone for half an hour or so and come back to find it's frozen and reporting "reading card" when there's no card in the slot. It occasionally freezes while I'm editing something too. Still not entirely stable it seems.

Really? With the current firmware? That stopped happening for me a LONG time back.

Hmm. That's not very reassuring.

Yeah it crashes every couple of hours, regardless of what I do.

I am currently daisy-chaining it with some other pedals but that shouldn't be an issue - the OS needs 300mA, the PSU can output 1500mA and the other pedals are Bassballs, Mammoth, LS-2, LMB-3 and a bypass loop switch so there's plenty of juice available.

quit daisy-chaining it dummkopf!

I'm sure one day I'll make music with this thing, but it's too fun to just make silly noises.

If you take the Plan 9 From Outer Space computer sound from above, change the Gate mode to "note", change the filter mode to "env", and set some distance between the filter ini frq and filter attack frq (oh and set VCF decay spd high) you get laz0r/syndrum noises.

This thing is a bundle of laughs. :D

i hate to admit it, but im really dissapointed with the OS...nothing sounds synthy, it just sounds like a (very good) filter/fuzz setup. maybe im just not hearing the kinds of samples id like to hear though...

I don't have one so Im not saying Im an expert on this pedal but what I have heard I agree with you. But again im not downing the pedal. I guess its just not what I was hoping it to be. But it has alot of sounds for those who really like that type of sound. I just wanted this to be the ultimate synth pedal that can do what the little fatty can do.

Well it's a single oscillator, a single filter and a single fuzz circuit - it's a lot less complicated than a Little Phatty, and a lot smaller, and considerably cheaper.

There are still improvements being made to the tracking and stuff - I think we'll see people experimenting more with the oscillator sounds with ADSR settings once the tracking gets a little better at rejecting noise. Then we'll hear some much synthier sounds out of it.

That said, if you use fuzz, filter or fuzz/filter sounds much, it's worth every penny anyway to be able to store and recall patchess. And the two circuits in the OS work better together than any combination of fuzz/filter I've heard before.

there will never be a compact stompbox for under 1500 that can do what the little phatty can do.

I don't know if I speak for someone else than myself, but in my case I don't have the knowledge to fully exploit the potential of this pedal, besides take in count is one of the first pedals of it's kind and there are still things that can be improved

I'm not knocking the squeezer - I really enjoyed mine. But if I want to program patches, i'd prefer to do that on a synth (since I have one). If I didn't, I would probably have kept it.

Somebody mentioned the "Flashlight" tone - you can't do this with the OS, because it won't stack octaves. You can have your dry tone and one blended octave - I think Bernie Worrell's minimoog is stacked 4 octaves deep on the Parliament recording. I don't know a bass synth pedal that will do that - and for good reason, as it would probably sound like mud unless the tracking is improved A LOT.

Plus you really need good control over modulation and the filter to play that sound like Bernie Worrell did. You'd need an extra foot. I don't think it will ever be mimicked on bass successfully.

That said, I've never heard anyone cop that exact same tone on a synth either. ;)
