Chunk's Octavius Squeezer: "Sound Clips & Settings Thread"

Plus you really need good control over modulation and the filter to play that sound like Bernie Worrell did. You'd need an extra foot. I don't think it will ever be mimicked on bass successfully.

That said, I've never heard anyone cop that exact same tone on a synth either. ;)

Hard to cop a studio recorded sound live of course, especially not when it's one of the all-time masters, but I've heard Bernie play that a few times and I think the "Flashlight" patch he contributed to the Minimoog Voyager is a darn good starting point (hint: turn up the bass on your amp)

Still getting the occasional crash though. Twice I've left it alone for half an hour or so and come back to find it's frozen and reporting "reading card" when there's no card in the slot. It occasionally freezes while I'm editing something too. Still not entirely stable it seems.

The "reading card..." message appears when you're not supplying enough power to the O.S. It's when the supply voltage sags and the O.S. tries to reset itself but
falls over halfway through the bootup sequence because there's not enough juice.

If you're running it from battery, it's probably flat. Make sure you use an alkaline battery and put the OS into low power mode if you want to use a battery. It also helps a lot to turn the backlight off if you don't need it.

If you're running it from a power supply, you need to make sure it can supply a nicely regulated 9V even when the OS is drawing 250mA from it. Too much voltage sag and you'll get a bad reset. There are several common pedal power supplies out there that are not rated for this kind of load, but as long as you have one that meets the specifications in the manual you won't have any issues with resets.

Thanks for that info.

It's weird, I had it daisy-chained on a PSU rated for 1500mA, with five other pedals:

A bypass looper that only powers an LED.
Woolly Mammoth (.5mA apparently!)
Boss LMB-3 Limiter (17mA)
Boss Line Selector (25mA)
EHX Bassballs (100mA - seems a lot...)

It could be that my PSU isn't as good as it says it is, I suppose. Both times I got that "reading card" message were on the same night and I haven't seen it since, so it's possible there was a problem with the grid that night or something.

Today while I was working I left the Squeezer plugged in with nothing else attached to the PSU to see how it got on - it managed to idle in bypass mode for about four hours with me occasionally changing params each time I got up.

Then I switched it on, ten minutes later it froze while I was adjusting some params at random (this "freeze" crash is the most common type I see). So I don't think daisy-chaining it is the issue.

Is nobody else having stability problems with the 009 firmware?

I'm not knocking the squeezer - I really enjoyed mine. But if I want to program patches, i'd prefer to do that on a synth (since I have one). If I didn't, I would probably have kept it.

Somebody mentioned the "Flashlight" tone - you can't do this with the OS, because it won't stack octaves. You can have your dry tone and one blended octave - I think Bernie Worrell's minimoog is stacked 4 octaves deep on the Parliament recording. I don't know a bass synth pedal that will do that - and for good reason, as it would probably sound like mud unless the tracking is improved A LOT.

Flash Light Groove: If you go on Dennis Chambers site it had a pretty good sound on bass in the video's Pocket section.

cool clip, but his bass tone doesn't come anywhere near the deep, stacked tone of the original. He does have some moduclation going that helps him get close though.

I said some nonsense about Bernie's original flashlight tone being 4 stancked octaves but that's actually unlikely - it's 3 octaves, but they roughly correspond to a bass guitar with -1 and -2 octaves added. And then there's the modulation, of course. Somebody build me a bass with pitch and mod wheels and i'll give up synth forever!

*Cough cough*

I'm having some issues updating the firmware... The OS doesn't want to read the SD card I have. It's a standard SanDisk 1GB SD, so I don't see why it shouldn't be working.

Does the SD have to be completely empty except for the firmware update file in order for the OS to read it?

Thanks.

I can't remember. Make sure the firmware file isn't in a folder on the card though - the OS won't search through folders for it. If necessary, move everything else on the card into a folder temporarily so the firmware file looks like it's on its own.

Because I didn't do it and the shop I bought it from claim they didn't do it either.

That is fishy, given that it's one of the first batch. Who did flash it then? :eyebrow:

I was really hoping I didn't have the latest firmware, because if that's the case I'm not too pleased at all with the tracking. :bawl:

The tracking is pretty good for me, certainly usable, but Richard at Chunk says there are more gains to be made in future revisions, it's still a work-in-progress. Are you having major issues or is it just the very low notes you're disappointed with?

The only real problem I have with it is when using ADSR on the VCO with a release time set - it tracks the variation in pitch when you release the string so the whole release phase of the note goes out of tune...

It's just not what I had expected. I think my expectations were sky-high, so that's certainly an issue... Also, I can only afford to keep it if I can convince myself that it's worth the money - that coupled with my sky-high expectations means that I've been looking for the key to tone-heaven, which I haven't found.

It's a great pedal, I just can't afford to keep it until they update the firmware again. :bawl:

That's a shame. I think we need to be a bit more realistic about the O.S. The potential is obvious, but Chunk are a small operation and this is a big project, it will take time for the product to mature. On the plus side I think most of the functionality is already at the stage where it's giggable though.

Exactly what I think, in fact I believe the only "problem" is the tracking the rest of the pedal is amazing

yes. too bad many of its coolest aspects are totally dependent on the tracking - which actually got worse with the updates (in my case).

If they ever get this issue worked out and release some programming software, expression input, etc, then I will happily re-buy the squeezer
