Chunk's Octavius Squeezer: "Sound Clips & Settings Thread"

I'm in the midst of perfecting a really quick attack, short sustain, laser blast sorta squelch.

sounds good, but i can't pluck the strings continuously to get as many notes as i want to. it seems like i have to mute my strings everytime i wanna hear it. i think it has something to do with triggering the sensitivity. anyone can help?

i'll try to record this over the weekend.

Can't wait for mine to arrive! I finally managed to find one with the help of a very kind TB'er.

It's #007 - how cool is that? :smug:

Do all you guys use an SD card with it? It's not included, is it?

Hi Chris, really stoked you got that unit. Mine arrived yesterday and I patched it to the latest firmware today.

You WILL NEED an SD card and an appropriate card-reader interface for your computer (I used my girlfriend's digital camera). The default firmware is awful - the tracking sucks and it crashes often - I can understand why so many original customers were angry, so you'll need to patch it before you can get serious with it.

There are two VERY IMPORTANT settings that you might miss if you don't read the manual properly straight away, they are:

"Protected" - for each of the original presets, this is set to "On", it's near the very end of the list of parameters - you can't save any changes to a preset until you switch it to "Off".

"Show All Params" - This is set to "Off" by default. Switch it to "On" so you can see everything that goes into making each sound. When it's on, you'll only see a few of the parameters, the ones that Chunk Systems think you might want to change in a live situation.

And definitely read through the manual with the Squeezer infront of you. It's a very complex pedal, and the edit interface (frankly) sucks, you WILL need all that information!

When you do start to understand it though, it's very powerful. You can think of it as a single oscillator, with a very versatile filter, and an ADSR-programmable amplifier section, plus a fuzz circuit and finally a mixer to join all those sounds together (but the mix settings are spread across a few parameters - it's not too hard to understand though).

It's no more complicated than that, so always try to think of the different parameters in terms of those groups and it makes editing a lot easier.

Good luck!

Maybe its also the VCF sweep... but as you said also the Track Sens can be part of it, one thing I would like of the OS is that the Track Sens could be like an individual Parameter sometimes I need to change it when using some settings

Just to clear this up: Track Sens is related to the note tracking, it's VCF Sens that is a global sensitivity adjustment for the envelope follower, and the VCF Sweep parameter is exactly the same thing as VCF Sens, but can be set for each patch.

I can't imagine why you'd need to change Track Sens. for each patch, unless you're making patches that you want to be deliberately glitchy or something?

The filter on this thing is great. Even if the rest of the pedal was useless, it'd be worth the money just for the programmable Env/ADSR filter.

It really is awesome. The only downside at the moment is the Tracking Sensitivity - it's not that the tracking is unreliable really, it's just hard to find the ideal setting for it.

To get plenty of sustain from notes, and make sure the synth triggers with every note you play, you want it quite high. But if it's too high the oscillator picks up any string noise as a new note and plays it. In ADSR mode it might play it LOUDLY!

The main problem here is when you release a note, sometimes the oscillator will sharpen slightly in reaction to the slight fret buzz it hears. Or if you mute with your right hand it might pick up a harmonic and run with that.

It's not so bad if you've got the oscillator set to gate at the end of your notes, but it's especially bad if you've got the Release rate set, because any bum note the oscillator comes up with is going to fade out gradually. Making you sound... bad!

Hopefully they'll come up with a way of lessening this problem. To be fair my Pulse Synth used to do a very similar thing.

For the some fuzz patches I need the harmonics to come up so I turn the Sens some kind of high but when using octavers the harmonics of the bass sometimes make it sound glitchy so I need to adjust it a little low.

or put a compressor in the front to even out the dynamics? that's what i'm doing.

i've turned the vca reatt to "on" but still the same. i still have to mute my strings to "reset" the synth trigger.

I was also thinking about that option, which one are you using? thinking of its if the VCF sweep is Global but also an specific parameter I think the Track Sens. could be programmed this way I think I will ask Richard if it can be done

I emailed Richard tonight after playing with the ADSR settings on the VCA. Currently it seems the Release portion is a bit useless, because when you stop a note the last thing the pitch tracker hears is either a harmonic or a slightly sharp note (from a moment of fret buzz as you release the string), so for the whole release phase you get an out-of-tune note. Sounds bad!

I suggested maybe having a smarter pitch tracker that could be set to reject changes of <x> cents or something. I'm not sure how practical it would be though, given that note attack is always slightly sharp for a moment too - you might end up with the whole note being out of tune, not just the release phase!

Haven't heard back yet but if he's got a solution to it I'll post his ideas in here.

I got mine a while back but haven't invested anywhere near enough time in it yet. I've just been using the defualt settings and having a bit of fun with them, but reading this thread is definately motivating me to start playing some more with it and tweaking it.
I got #68...........maybe i should've waited for one more sale!!

I've also gotta update the firmware as have had it freeze a few times so glad to hear it can fixed simple.

Cheers Kevteop for the digital camera idea for reading the SD card......here I was thinking I had to go out and buy some special device. I'll sort this out when I get home this arvo after work!

I'll be checking back on this thread quite regularly for sure!
