Clones of the Clone Theory?

I built a clone of the CT using the original MN3007 circuit with the 'flange' switch (which is my favorite version of it)
it sounds great. years ago, when it first came out, I had the SAD1024 version and it was just way too noisy for my taste.
I haven't tried it with some dirt or a boost in front of it to see if it can handle it yet, but I will tomorrow.

I tested this tonight and found the Boost Chorus to be fine after distortion and fuzz. What unpleasant sound/effect is it making for you that makes you not want to put it after a dirt box? Could be it's picky about sounding nice with certain other pedals in front of it.
I put my tone down (in the chorus) and rearranged my board. Totally. Now, chorus places at the beginning.

Dear Johnk 10! Can you compare that pretty guy to Tech21 Bass Boost Chorus meaning "that Hooky sound''? So what the flanger does? Is it the sound of
?

Still eagerly awaiting hearing this one! :)

Sweet! Whats under the bonnet? MN3007 or SAD chip?

Maybe 3007 but I don't know if it's actually a Clone Theory clone. I think it's just a chorus pedal. But I can't see their FB page and couldn't find a home page for them so I don't have much info besides what's on youtube.

johnk_10, really respect your views on pedals....i've often found my own experience with various pedals matches quite a lot of your reviews. Can you remember whether there was much sonic difference between the SAD1024 chip and the MN3007 (apart from the noise level)? Also i know you like the Tech21 bass boost, how do you find it compared to the RI Clone theory or your clone theory in terms of copping that classic CT tone?

So I just bought a Stereo Clone Theory, and without nifty instructions like Tech 21's guide I'm lost on where to set the depth and the rate. Could anyone tell me what settings would be optimal for Peter Hook lines and what settings would be great for a Simon Gallup sound? Thanks so much

When I recently tried out a Small Clone clone (similar but not the same, I know), I thought it was a very convincing Hooky tone to have Depth at about 1-2 o'clock, and Rate at about 10-11 o'clock. Maybe that gives you a place to start with those two controls.

For Hooky sound i go: Chorus mode 2, depth and rate between 12 and 1 o'clock

hmmm...been pondering this more and more recently as there's a couple of vintage CT's up for sale in the UK that i've come v close to pulling the trigger on. Thing is the more i read about these i've found there's several different versions of the vintage CT:
SAD with Edge
MN3007 with Edge
MN3007 with VibFlange

some more details on a serarate forum: Invalid Link Removed

So unless a seller know's which chip is under the bonnet its a bit of a crapshoot. Plus as i have the reissue with the MN3007 chip in already, how different can they be? Plus common feedback i'm reading is that the SAD chip was a bit icier but also came with more noise. The MN3007 chip was superior in that it had less noise (plus the SAD chip was being discontinued).

Yes, crapshoot it is. I was just recently contacting a sell of a vintage unit, and I asked for a gutshot of it so I could see what chip was in there, and he refused. Fair enough, but I also then refused to have any further interest in buying it. :)

My chosen solution here has been to get a custom build of the vintage circuit with an MN3007 (with the flange switch). I'm due to get it in a few weeks, maybe I'll post some clips after it arrives!

Never had the chance to try out an original edge Clone Theory (is yours the edge-version Hook uses with the SAD-chip?).

Yes, my original CT is the same as the first one Hook bought/used.

I should do a better job of reading the details. My original Clone Theory is the vibe switch version, not the edge switch version. But to the best of my research, Hook did not have an edge switch CT either. He got his first Clone Theory pedal in 1979, same year as mine. While there was a brief period of MN3007 chip loaded CT pedals with an edge switch, they aren't that common and all I've seen of Hook's Clone Theory collection are the MN3007 chip and Vibe switch version. It's possible Hook has owned edge switch versions too, but he doesn't get his tone specifically from the edge switch version, and I'd bet that at least the bulk of New Order was done with MN3007/Vibe switch versions of the Clone Theory, if not all of Joy Division too (the back half of JD when he had a CT pedal that is).

He does have at least 13 of them (according to an interview I saw with him), so it is possible he has a mix of them. I haven't had the pleasure of seeing his collection, but I have heard that the edge switch seemed to add hiss more than anything else. I'd still like to try one, but not only are vintage one with the edge switch tough to find, I have yet to find a schematic for an edge switch circuit (let alone an SAD1024 circuit).

Just had my first go at recording some bass lines at home. Here's my Hooky tone using only the CT RI straight into Zoom R8, no other effects or processing. P bass with rounds:
