Nice pickup/trade Tom! I enjoy the sound (and weight!) of my LM SO much more then my old Updates. The more 'traditional' passive like J bass tone just works SO well in the mix versus the rather scooped, over the top lows and highs of the Update for me, that I've never looked back.
I think you will dig it a lot, and the grind and punch of the LM in a mix is really something.

Thanks! Yes, I can already tell that it is much closer than the Celinder to the sound of my '73 Jazz. It plays great, too. I had been wanting to get one of Jimmy's basses in my stable, and this seemed like a good way to do it.

Thanks! To be honest, that finish is not easy to photograph. Without some very bright light, it does look a good bit darker, and you don't see the grain as much. Once the weather improves, I'll try to get a shot outside in natural lighting.

That's a tough call IMO. I always liked perloid when you have the perloid blocks... nice consistent look. However, with that very 'old school' finish, it might 'jump' to the eye a bit too much.
I really dig the black, which I think is the 'period correct' look (although I don't pay attention to much of that stuff). I guess if I had to choose, I'd probably leave it alone.

Thanks for the feedback. I'm pretty much thinking the same way that you are. I normally love a pearloid guard with pearloid blocks, but I don't want to throw the vibe off.
Does anyone know what Jimmy charges for another guard if I wanted to try?

So...now that Ken has been forced to gig a P bass...what are the Vegas odds on him ordering up a KPB5?

Zero! Actually, since I was toying with the idea in the back of my head, it was very good to confirm that the P is totally not my thing. If you look at it that way, I got a $4,000 bonus on top of the gig pay for the weekend
One thing that I found (and maybe the P guys can either confirm this or set me straight) is that the right hand position on a P resulted in more extreme tonal changes than my beloved J's. The negative to that is that I found any playing toward the bridge resulted in a very unpleasant tone (nasal without the burp I love so much with a J), and that, much more than a J, which sounds 'different but good' with any right hand position), the P (at least this P) had a real sweet spot either right over the pickup or slightly toward the neck, where it really sounded like a classic P.
In that respect, I found it a total one trick pony... meaty and full, but not particularly deep nor articulate.

I'm fairly new here and not yet a "regular" so my opinion may not mean a hill of beans to you, but I'm going to give it anyway
I really dig the maple/pearloid combo, and IMO if you were to switch guards to a pearloid It would detract from the POP that the pearloid blocks gives the bass. Necessarily it'd be too much of a good thing.

+1...the Pbass is all about the right hand position(if you're right handed) IMO. Which is probably why I don't get along with them as I prefer to play a little closer to the bridge. Thankfully, Leo designed the Music Man with the "sweet spot".
...and of course the J-bass.
