Club Alleva-Coppolo (Part 12!!!)

Hello Alleva Coppola lovers - I have a Nordy VJ5 and a Sadowsky 4 and I love 'em both. Tell me why I should have an AC!

Unless you play one and find it to your liking, there is absolutely no reason to have an Alleva Coppolo. Nordstrands and Sadowskys are both excellent basses. In my case, I simply like the playability and sound characteristics (especially in a live mix) of Jimmy's basses over pretty much everything else. YMMV.

Honestly, for me it's all about the vintage feel and sound of a 5 string jazz that I have not found in other basses. It seems to me almost every spec on these basses match perfectly to my style of playing. Even as small as the inline tuners, which are so convenient when tuning on a gig in the dark, to the natural extension of the traditional control layout.

I have 2 Nordy VJ-5's and have owned Sadowskys as well..
Both are great.. I also have owned Celinders which were fantastic.. I got to check out the Alleva Coppolos on my last trip to L.A. and visited Jimmys shop and like the Celinders they were very special.. The tone/sound and feel just blew me away.. If I were not on my quest to save money this year, I may have ordered one...

I don't think it is....If I am not mistaken mine had a bit more black in the upper horn...The grain pattern seems familiar though...could be the lighting?? I had 2 of these and they were both great basses so i can only assume this is a great one whether it was mine or not!

Tom, I think yours has the DN board, right? This one is Indian rosewood. And the finish on this one is the iced tea nitro finish. Here are some links to prior transactions involving this bass:

Yeah, it seems to have made the rounds, but at least on paper, this bass is exactly what I was looking for, so I think it's going to stick this time. That LM4 Deluxe was awesome, too, but I really have a hankering for that alder/rosewood goodness.

Now, to find me a matching Hipshot D-tuner. Any suggestions?

Jimmy sent me this one.. Took a while for it to come in from hipshot.. but its a direct replacement for the Alleva '66 style tuners. He may have a few at the shop...

Tom, You are right. You can cover alot of ground on a 4..
Since i sold my LG5 i have been digging playing 4 string again.. until my new custom LM gets here.. (Going to paint soon ).
My Kbp4 and Alleva LG4 both have D-Tuners, and quite honestly i love them..
What i found to help alot is putting some Pencil Graphite dust in the Nut Slot, which really helps when you go back to normal pitch..

A little goes a really long way, and you don't have to worry about graphite getting on stuff and making it look dirty. I've known a lot of guitar players with trem systems swear by this stuff.

Ok. I saw Nate Watts in BassPlayer. So of course I had to pull 'Do I Do" out since his LG is Inca Silver too. LOL! Hummed the bassline, had main groove going. But had to sit bass down after hearing his runs and fills. SMH!

I guess I'm lucky enough that a 5 string is no issue for me, and hence never have the 'need' to ever use a 4 string (in many, many years) I did have a 'rental' 4 string at a recent gig I did out of the country, and had no issue with playing the tunes, though... very little downside, I guess.

I guess since muting that B string has become second nature to me, I can literally play anything on a 5 that I can play on a 4, so can't quite ever see the 'advantage' of going to a 4 (seems like it is all on the 'losing capability side' versus any particular upside). When I did play 4 strings back in the day, I never really had any problem playing any tune I needed to play in any key, and was never motivated to use one of those drop tuner things.

I guess it is all just personal taste. When I play a tune or gig that doesn't require the B string, I just don't use that string

FWIW. There's just something special about white/tort IMHO.

Oly and tort looks amazing to me. Pure white and tort, not so much, since the 'white' parts of most tort guards are more oly white than pure white. Doesn't really work to my eye. Pure white.... that black guard looks fantastic to me... one of my favorite combinations. Again, aesthetics is purely personal, so whatever floats your boat, but I wouldn't change a thing on that bass!

I gave up my wedding/corporate gig a month ago or so to give me more time at home with our young son, more time fishing and on the boat. Also to allow me the chance to do something different, as many of you know playing Brickhouse 3x per week gets real old no matter what the pay is...

I've had a jazz quartet on upright going for some time and am planning to focus more efforts on that. Over the weekend the opportunity came up to audition for a great female singer doing originals, she was a top 25 American Idol contestant a few years back, a wonderful person and a phenominal singer.

As I mentioned I swapped a set of TI flats onto my LG5 last week and currently it's the only electric I have, waiting on the LM5 in the coming weeks. Just got the text audition tonight, no time to swap out the strings before hand. I'll be doing the audition with upright and the LG5 with TI flats. I am a dummy!

EDIT: And in addition they've got a "nice peavey" bass amp in the rehearsal studio so there's no need for me to show up with my own amp.....

Hey guys .... I'm in Tokyo, Japan for the next few weeks with "Dreamgirls". Today was my first day out & about. I have a bass player friend who directed me downtown to a bass shop called "Bass Collection by Ikebe". Ikebe is a series of about 6 shops, same area, different buildings with basses, drums, gtrs, amps, etc. Anyway, my friend said that he'd bet that they had some AC's there. Sure enough, as I walked in the door, the very first thing I saw on the wall were the basses in this pic: 2 LG5's (poly w satin necks) and a nitro KBP4. I played the black one & true to form, it felt and played amazing. I was kinda bummed that neither of the sales guys spoke a lick of english and had no idea what i was doing by showing them a pic of me (on my phone) with an AC or a pic of Jimmy (on my phone). Oh well ...
I am also in the process of coordinating a visit with Hajime Hirose, the AC distributor here in Japan.
Hope all is well with my AC brothers back in the states.
