I'm spending the better part of my free time A/Bing the LG5 vs. the LM5. There is quite a drastic difference in the tones, it really is amazing. It is becoming so apparent to me now how midrange growly the LG5 really is. The LM5 is really smooth and very articulate, I am really enjoying the passive tone of this bass too. Now that I've locked into what the LM5 can do I have little interest in a significant treble boost. While I enjoy a little bass boost for slapping it's less focused playing fingerstyle and flat is where it's at right now.

These two basses warrant a different approach the LG5 sings when I really dig in and get some meat on the strings while the LM5 responds nicely to a softer touch and I'm not seeing many benefits to digging in.

At the moment the LG5 is wearing a set of Stainless Low Riders and the LM5 is sporting Hi Beams. I'll give it another week and I may play around with the pairings a bit. The Low Riders on the LG5 are fairly new to me, they certainly grind more then Hi Beams, where the Hi Beams are a little more glassy.

For those of us who don't exactly know what the letters and
numbers stand for, could you explain the difference between
these two basses please?

Interesting. One would think the LG5 would have more lows
being an Alder/Rosewood bass, and having the back pickup
farther from the bridge.

My LM has way more booty down low than my LG... ash baby... ash. The 60's pickup position does impact the lower mids though, which is why the 60's instruments tend to 'growl' in the low mids and be more 'round' down low and airy up top (alder & RW of course have a bit to do with that also), and the 70's instruments tend to grind in the upper mids (mostly coming from the maple board), and to extend deep (that ash thing), but sound a bit hollow (i.e., non burpy) when digging in due to that bridge pickup moved closer to the bridge, and also the ash and maple.

IMO and IME.

Edit: This is why I continue to be a bit giddy about the Sadowsky ash/maple vintage spec... ash/maple for big low end and grind and brightness, but that 60's pickup position to provide a bit more 'burp and growl' than a typical ash/maple 70's J. Best of both worlds for me as far as a 'utility bass' that can do pretty much everything. I of course still adore the more vintage-legit A-C voicings also... all good stuff.

My God, what a terrible song. Is this what kids listen to these days? And why can't she be tamed? Shock therapy can do wonders.

I know our parents said the same thing about the music we listened to when we were young..

one thing, and only one thing i have learned,, and that is grow and change with the times or we get left in the oldies rack...
Such as the band im heading to do the EU tour with... but hey its a job...
Id prefer the letterman choice..

+1 Kirk. Though I didn't always feel this way. It used to be that I wanted to be in all original bands with music I/we write and make or break it with that. But now, any music/project that I can at least understand enough to play my best (or at least fake it) is just fine... Bottom line is you're getting paid to play your bass.

Hey Ken,
Can't AC make a bass that is an Ash/Maple, with the 60's pickup spacing if you ask them to? That doesn't seem like an outlandish request. Also, I was wondering if AC would do a PJ model if you asked them to. Or are they really devoted to vintage-legit concepts only?
