I'll have a look at that later tonight, but let me ask - do you set your pickups so that the height is equal at all of the strings? I did not measure when I originally got this bass so I have no idea what they used to be, but they are higher now. I simply couldn't get them high enough without foam.

Great question. Probably most often, but not always, and if I don't, I usually set the G string closer than the E string. Basically, I operate based on the notion that more movement and/or more mass, means a stronger signal, and more distance to "even things out"... IF that's desired. I temper that with the nature of the instrument. I can use that to compensate for a particularly strong or maybe slightly weaker top or bottom.

I should also qualify my comments... I eyeball this stuff. I don't use a gauge. Same for neck relief. Just been doin' it for so long I know how much "bounce" and "gap" to put here and there depending on the instrument type.

I just back from France trip.. Went great! But my inbox was full.. Found this email that Jimmy sent me of new Pups he is making for 5 String basses. They are regular Generic size JJ sets... Below is the photo he sent.. Single Coil JJ 5 string sets...
I would have posted the other day but i didnt have my laptop only my Ipod touch and couldn't figure how to save and repost from email program in it.
Anyway , I am going to try a set of these in my sadowsky 5 after bass player live next week.

Measured using the "Vic" method...

1/8" at the neck pickup for the E string
3/32" at the neck pickup for the G string
3/16" at the bridge pickup for both E and G strings

I just adjusted the pickups up and down until the bass sounded right, there was no attempt made to level, it just worked out that way for the bridge pickup.

Wow, you actually like your neck pickup higher than the bridge. Interesting!

i always set my jazzes with the neck pickup at least at the same height as the bridge if not higher than the bridge pickup. i think the equally blended setting sounds better that way. easier to get a larry graham or marcus miller sound depending on the bass. yeah, the neck pickup is louder than the bridge pickup solo'd, but thats pretty minor imo.

Ok, that's two good recs... I'm gonna' have to try this.

Everything is done in house in Upland CA, by him and Sebnem, I think Yohan is part time.. Will find out more next week at Bass Player live.

You will have to ask him about his pricing though... I have nothing to do with that.

Just visited his shop a few days ago and I must say his painter that does his nitro stuff is just amazing! He had a Tone Burst on a LG5 that was to die for!

The thing is he also had a 3 tone burst in poly to do an AB and I must say regardless of the debate on which sounds better or whatever the debate on which looks better for me is a done deal.... nitro wins!

Just when you think a basic or standard will do this has to happen!

Yeah, what he said. Also gives you a decent "mock" P bass tone if you turn up the neck pickup a bit.

The problem with having your neck pickup the same height as your bridge pickup is that as you get into the higher positions (>~10th fret) the neck pickup gets really close to the strings and that blend gets skewed a bit too much (for my taste at least.)

It definitely is a matter of personal preference though - so if you like that sort of thing, that's what matters.
