Hey Kirk,
Quick question...if im using pedals like an Xotic RC and others of the sort..im hitting the reddi hot. I still havent found "home" yet but what would you recommend.
1. Run my pedals normal and have the REDDI at like 12 or so "to taste" and back down the pre on the board or in the studio?
2. Back down the pedal output to hit the REDDI less.
3. Leave everything "As Is" and use the REDDI as a volume control and set it right before it breaks up.
They each sound great..just curious if there is a "preferred" way.

Confirmed.. Peter Montessi from A-Design will have a REDDI box + headphone amp at the Alleva booth at Bass Player live.. Also Jimmy's Trusty Aguilar Amp.
REDDI / A-Design will have Bobby Vegas JJ4 Alleva at their booth for demo purposes.
Will be a fun show for all.

I am not familiar with the Xotic at all..
I like to set my gain stages to zero unity to always get best S/N ratio.. but since there are no meters we have to use our ears on this one.
I guess there is NO correct way.. since it really is a matter of taste..
I use my basses and like to run my REDDI at 12 noon or higher... Paul Turner runs his about the same.
I have never been able to get breakup from my REDDI though..
When going into a mixer the REDDI can be hot since it is hitting a preamp in the mixer.. but when recording i like to go striagt to tape/AD converter+4 so i have to put a preamp inline so my chain then is Bass>REDDI>EM500 Pre> AD converter.
So if i get you right.. try to get your tone happening with the Xotic. then dial the output of your REDDI to send a nice level to the Mixer.. most consoles even inexpensive ones like a Mackie will have an input gain Attenuator of some sort to PAD the input if too hot...
I like it hot.. Im old school though.. and use my ears as you do... only thses days with so much digital stuff yo umay have to watch any meters to avoid that horrid digital clip...

HA! This is dope! I did a bunch of gigs with this EXACT calypso trio setup and my AC killed too!!
Since we were talking about the REDDI... Peter Montessi just sent this photo to me..It still worked. Pot was a little scratchy.Its not mine.. just a unit that he got for a Little Repair.

Ouch. I do that from time to time with a drink from McDonald's or somewhere like that. It's a bad enough feeling... I can only imagine what it would feel like as my Reddi took flight from the car roof. Horrors...

I can't really justify a REDDI, but I have the Radial JDI and I must say I'm VERY happy with it... even in the one Aviom gig I have (a contemporary praise and worship thing).
Funny story, one of the previous P&W leaders was real insistent about using the SVT DI box, which I HATE. Ever time I played my rotation, I secretly disconnected it and plugged in my Radial. He never noticed... but I did.

I too have the JDI and its GREAT!! I actually used to do the same thing with an Avalon that i wasnt crazy about. They never knew the difference. Upside....my case fits a space for the JDI too so IN it goes!
Heres a different question...anyone have a idea what frequency the low boost is set too. Just curious..
I'm guessing that your question is about the low boost frequency of the Alleva preamp.
I would LOVE to know the answer to that, too. And also what about the Hi boost - what frequencies are boosted there?
I've done a search here on the talkbass forum but haven't found the answer, and also went to Jimmy's site, hoping to find specs for the preamp, also a google search with no luck.
I'm really hoping to find out, too - here's hoping!
I'm pretty sure it is the relatively standard 40hz/4K from threads way back in the day.
However, the shelving start points or center points of tone controls are just a small part of the impact of a tone control. It's all about the Q's, the roll-off slope, the hi passing, lo passing etc., etc., and that info is almost impossible to get from any manufacturer, since that stuff really represents the 'ingredients that define the taste of the stew'.
Treble is a bit higher than I remember then. Wonderful pre, and whoever voiced it really knows what they are doing IMO!
