yeah it has always been around the 6.5 , give or take a couple of hz
It was never at 4 k... that always sounded too harsh to me... but the higher 6.5-ish is sweeter.. at least i thought so.

Treble is a bit higher than I remember then. Wonderful pre, and whoever voiced it really knows what they are doing IMO!

I'm assuming he uses exactly the same preamp regardless of LM/LG, right? I'm also figuring he did most of his testing in an LG or similar config. I wonder, if he were designing preamps now, if he'd have two differently voiced preamps... one for the LM and one for the LG.

Just thinking out loud... it'd be interesting to know tho.

Yes. You are correct.. They are the same exact preamp in all his basses..

Interesting thought. IMO, this would be the LM voicing to me, since there is so much going on in the lower treble with those instruments already. The more typical 4K shelving or center point might be interesting to allow the LG's to mimic just a touch of the LM grind up top (i.e., like the Sadowsky treble control).

I've never used the treble boost on either of mine though, so kind of a moot point to me. That 4K lower thing is pretty nice to brighten up a one way cab though, or add a bit of grind to an instrument that is very smooth up top.

I VERY rarely(so far) use the treb OR bass Boost. The tone control works a treat in both active & passive modes.

Thats ONE thing that 'got me' as far as this bass went- the ability to use the TONE control in active AND passive is a huge + for me.

It means I can use it as a 'standard' 'JAZZ' style bass in either mode. AND it sounds great in both too.
But the pre-amp in my AC (which Jimmy said in his reply to my emails re the EUT5 prior to my buying it-IS the same as in all his Jazz style basses) is certainly sweet & adds another dimension- beautifully subtle too!
LOVE it!

Gosh, the LM's sound amazing for what they do. I reposted a clip of an amp comparison on my Youtube channel for a TB buddy over on the amp part of the site (I typically take down these very specific comparison requests that don't have a lot of general interest). Lots of blah blah and knob turning, but I used the LM as the signal source. My gosh, just grindy and fat and aggressive.

If anyone is interested in hearing an LM with DR Hi Beams, between 45 seconds and about 2 minutes just sounds sweet as heck. I have the preamp engaged with just a slight bass boost, and the passive tone control at neutral. While you can hear that buffering/sweetening caused by the active preamp (along with the very pure and sweet sounding Hi Beams), it still has plenty of 70's ganky grind for me. With Dr Lo Riders in passive mode, it REALLY does the old school gank wonderfully!

Jimmy really has nailed the 'modern take' on the classic 70's type tone (LM), and the classic 60's type tone (LG) for me, especially when you put the basses in passive mode and remove that 'sweetening' that the buffering causes (if that's your thing... for the most part, I think the sweetening and widening of the tone makes the LM sound better.... it is a toss up with the LG to my ears).

Just FYI... it is the first clip that comes up if you hit the link in my sig.

I can't wait to hear yours. I assume with the tweaks Jimmy has made with the LM, yours will sound even better. Cool! I'm hoping you are only a few weeks from delivery (per your posts of last week). I'm really to play that bass!

All depends on how long it takes for the neck to get back from paint. When it gets back, all he has to do is out it together and it should be ready to go! If it sounds half as good as yours then I'm gonna be a happy man...

"Really?"

ha!

Hey Vision,

I'm sure it's in here somewhere but, without digging back through the last couple of AG threads, what are the specs of your LM? Ken mentioned some tweaks you were doing in an above post - what are they?

I'm really jonesing for an LG, being true to myself, I know that after I get one I'm going to want an LM also -- so I may as well start the learning process on that model as well!

Thanks,
JC

It's going to be hard to improve on them IMO, but I guess Jimmy really went to school on the LM's over the past year. I guess, unfortunately, the ones he showed at NAMM were quite 'prototype' in nature, with some fit and finish problems (that was REALLY a mistake IMO, and caused even me, the A-C fan boy, to stop recommending these basses to people for a while). However, he seems to have everything locked and loaded, and the recent deliveries of these basses seems to be back to the old 'NYC shop standards', which is great.

One piece necks, a touch heavier weight (not much, from what it seems, which is good), I think possibly a touch different pickup winding from the early ones like mine, etc., etc. Can't wait to hear and play one.

PS and OT... That little, inexpensive TC RS210 used in that clip is among the best sounding 210's I've ever heard. GREAT J bass cab... fat, warm, not too extended down low (i.e., tight and punchy), and a sweet, organic coax tweeter. Really nice, and it likes the A-C voicing a lot!

He was just blowin' you some friendly crap about accidentally typing "really" when you meant to say "ready". :)

Ken hit the nail on the head with the new specs. Specifically mine is gonna be 3T burst, tort guard, blocks and binding and vintage tint on the neck.
