Club Alleva-Coppolo (Part 17)

Well here it is! first dibs to our fellow A-C club members... This is an early 2005 (serial# B5 0025) this is one of the first LG's that help put Jimmy on the map here in the NYC music scene.

CAR, LG5, African rosewood, 9.2 lbs, matching headstock, all nitro body and neck, vintage tint on back of neck, in great condition, and man,,, this bass nails that Paul Turner tone FOR REAL!!!!

BTW folks, Gil and I have done business before on a high end bass and he's top shelf. Don't hesitate.

Thanks everyone, it really hurts doing this but, after loosing our family dog last month, we actually spent a bunch of money trying to keep her alive, now all of the bills are coming in with a vengeance...

She will me missed ; RIP sheena

+1. Last year I sold my orange one cause I don't think I understood the spec/tone at the time, I didn't appreciate it (and plus I fell into MTD gas)... But looking back I wish I would've kept it or now I can see myself getting an RA in the future.

I owned and sold that same orange RA and regret it also. The timing wasn't great for me and I flipped it almost right away. I wish I would have given it more time.

Random question. Would an early 70s Jazz Bass (73 to be exact) be similar in TONE to an RA. Only major difference to the one in question is a RW Board...
( i believe its Alder, 70s but RW )

Buddy of mine owes me some money and us tryin to get it into my hands. Any opinions on my inquiry is appreciated..

Then I owned and sold. But, I think the LM will be what I'm looking for with maple board.

Hey Mike, I've played several early 70s with the spec you laid out and I really liked them...the Coppolo RAs have 70s placement with alder and maple boards ( which Fender did do around the same time as they did same spec with RW) and changing the board to RW will warm up the tone a bit and give a sweeter high end . It was all Indian AFAIK which had a thick bottom end and not as clean/clear/pronounced highs as Brazilian and maple IMO. The overall tone of the early 70s alder/70s pup placement is tight but warm and smooth. No heavy scoop but punchy tight warm mids...with a maple board the sizzle in the high end comes out a bit more for slap but there is alot of growl and enough high end with the Indian RW. I like both. Fender also I think used a nitro/poly combined finish at the time for bodies whereas Jimmy uses either full nitro or full poly. I have one of both from him and they do sound different in ways I would have characterized for the individual finish- could be other reasons involved with that- I know :). But I'm one of the people on the side that finish does make some difference in tone .

Right now ( and probebly since I've been playing ACs) the RA is my fav overall by a hair. When you put this combo in a 5 ( as opposed to a Fender 4) it adds girth to the spec which to my ear is a great character to add to this bass ...and might have been exactly what I would have wanted , if anything, to add to this version of the Fender Jazz when I had them in the 70s.

So to answer directly- the bass you are talking about will be very similar in tone to an RA, but it being a 4, possibly having a different finish, and a rosewood board, it will be a bit different than a standard RA IMO. But not in any negative way...they can be killer .

I wanted to gush a bit also on the RA after reading the posts above....I'm really a big fan. The Tom Barney RA I have right now is something else!
