Hi has anyone got any info, or know much about the Tom Barney signiture 5?
i have been offered prototype 1, i own a gorgeous lm5 custom which i love, just wanted to know what the differemces are as i am unable to try it out. I know the string spacing on the Tom Barney signiture model is 18mm and my lm5 is 19mm. Anyone know if the nut is the the same size on both and any other info etc

cheers

Hi Haz. I have a Tom Barney RA ( any model can be "Barneyized" as far as I know), and I also have some other ACs too. Along with the smaller string spacing the neck is slightly profiled in width to accomodate that string spacing and it feels like the nut is just slightly smaller too. I'm not able to measure for comparison right now but can if you really want and post later.
The other thing is that the pups are not the same size as the regular ACs. They are custom made to accomodate the 18 mm spacing. So everything feels a bit easier for my smaller hands. The regular ACs feel great too, but if you like that slightly tighter feel with no compromise on tone this a good option IMO.

My LM5 order is locked in with Jimmy -- I'm psyched!

Now I need to decide on color. My neck is actually done (using something Jimmy had already.) It's a two tone b/w binding. It's quite pretty looking.

I was going to go with a TTB but I'm thinking it may be too busy with blocks, two tone binding, tort, etc.

Now I'm thinking of either trans red w/ a pearloid guard:

Or Harvest gold:

I could also do a light, iced-tea burst rather than TTB:

Or finally, natural:

What do other think?

Thanks!

I like a nice solid color with maple board, but that teaburst is oh so Funky!

Personally, I think the two or three tone burst would still look great, but if not, then probably a trans color... like red or blue.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE harvest gold with a maple neck/board, BUT, at least IMHO, I think the fact that the binding has black in it might look a bit odd to me in that specific case.

If it was pure white binding, harvest gold would be my first choice (beyond a 2/3 tone burst), but I think the "black line" on the neck would just seem a bit out of place on a bass with such a purely light colored theme between the gold and all the natural maple. I think you need a darker colored body to bring it all together.

IMHO! :)
