I didn't get the change... I have the smaller.. But after playing many of his basses, I think the bigger looks and feels ... Right.. They are both great...
Thanks man. The new shape looks odd to me in some of the photos I've seen -- but it's really hard to tell.
I have a new body style LG5 coming today so I'll have the chance to try new and old side by side.
If I hate the new one, there will be a mint TTB LG5 available by the weekend!

I would agree....both my ACs are the old body designs and I think they feel perfect. I was just at the shop this past weekend and played a couple of the newer body designs and while they felt amazing and sounded incredible, I still preferred the feel of the smaller bodies. Wish mine had that newer neck pocket though!
And for those who have never been to the shop, this was my first time seeing the new one in CA. Jimmy really is running a one man operation out of that space with a ton of help from Rick who I got to hang with and watch him work and get covered in wood dust
....but the attention to detail is incredible and Jimmy really is insane about what he does and how he does it....I find that kind of passion is rather rare in this day and age and it makes me feel good to know that kind of love and attention went into instruments that help fuel my passion. I was also able to affirm my love for the RA5 as my favorite of Jimmy's basses....there's just something about that wood combo and pickup spacing that does it for me. I don't know....btw, here's a pic of it with my full setup for the next O.A.R. tour in January!

Ken, the V-type makes ANY bass sound incredible! I'm glad I finally have a gig worthy of using it....first and only amp I've ever reached for the bass knob to turn it down!!

One of the few tube heads I've heard that I REALLY like. Although, with that many speakers hooked up, bassdoubler better hope they have quake insurance!!!

+1 on the V type tube heads. In the case of this one, if I remember correctly from playing Matroks, and also the one I played at your house way back when, I don't think this particular model has a tube in it... but it just grinds and growls.
Really? I thought for sure the V6 (pictured) was all tube ("all valve")... 6 KT-88's in the power section, no?
If you look at the right front panel, it says 'V Type', which again I believe was Trace's short lived but very nice attempt at 'tube amp emulation'. You can also see there is no standby switch, which is also a give-away.
Not 100% sure though. You are correct the the full V6 is a wonderful all tube amp (never played one, but still think about Tom's V8). However the 'V-Type' heads are, to the best of my memory, a different thing, but still killer in their own way... relatively lightweight, and surprising tube tone. If I remember right, they don't even have a preamp tube... all solid state (might be wrong there though.. might be a preamp tube in there).

The V4, V6, and V8 are all tube at 220, 400, and 400 watts respectively (although I was never quite clear on how both the V6 and V8 were both rated at 400 watts). The V-type 300 and 600H models are MOSFET power section/4 x 12Ax7 tube pres and look the same as the other V-type heads.
That's what I was remembering. Forgot about all those tubes in the pre on the hybrids. Amazing amps.
So, is that a full all tube V, or the MOSFET model? Killer either way! I assume that is the Mosfet, given it doesn't seem to have a standby switch.

Nope! it's the V6 so it's got 4 x AX7s in the pre (a quad of 1951 Telefunken smooth plates)
and 6 x KT88s. That big silver switch on the front right is the standby switch, the ON knob is on the back!

Sorry for the OT and the confusion on my part. I remember Tom's V8 looking different than that one, but am probably just misremembering... it has been a while.

no you're right, the V8 has a completely different grill and knob layout as well as a couple of late production V4s so that would explain the confusion....I totally forgot about that....but pretty much the only thing distinguishing the MOSFET from the tube models in the mid-90s was the badge. Excluding a couple of very early V4s, the MOSFET guys received a "Trace Elliot" badge, rather than a "V4" or "V6" like mine.
Back on an AC topic, Alex, Rick and myself came upon an interesting subject while trying each others basses. Where do you all set your volume and tone knobs? Rick was surprised to find that on each bass I set the volume knobs at about 55% open and the tone knob at about 50% open, while he rocks his LG with both volumes wide open and the tone knob at about 75% open. I find that Jimmy's pre gets a warmer, fatter punch when not fully open....anybody else get me on this?
