NEW BASS DAY!!!

So even though I only have about an hour of playingaround time with it, I thought I'd do just a quick comparison between my new Tom Barney LM5 and my older RA5....
First off, the LM sounds and feels amazing. It's by far the lightest LM I've played and the weight is perfect for me. The neck is a little chunkier than my RA and the body is way bigger. I still need to throw my black diamonds on it and set it up a little differently, but as of now the RA definitely takes the trophy for tone. The LM slaps a little better which I assumed it would but other than I can't really find anything else the LM can do that the RA can't and that RA warmth def makes up for the slapping.
I also can't really tell a huge difference between the string spacing....I keep switching back and forth between basses and they feel VERY similar....possibly because I have 40-120s on my RA and Jimmy put thicker gauge strings on my LM....but this thingis gonna be the perfect touring bass I can feel it!!! More to come after some gigs!
Oh and btw, as you can see in my pics my bass has that 9/11 conspiracy tribute on the back which I think is cool but if you don't want that on your bass you better make a phone call!!!!

Nice bass Mitch....and I concur generally with your view of the RA. I have a killer LM Special Edition that does everything well, but the Tom Barney RA here is my first choice by a hair.
It does sound like the string gauge diff is evening things up a bit... the difference from my 19mm LM to the 18mm RA is quite noticable with the same gauges. At least to me.
Does your new LM have a poly finish?
Psyched! Jimmy sent me a note and said he was carving the body of my LM5 today. I can't wait!

BTW, can you describe any difference in basic tone between the KP5 and KP4...or do they come out very similar...

I think its a big YES. for NAMM... I may go to a gig in Switzerland on a gig .. I hope so . but if not i will be at NAMM.
My KBP4 and 5.. mmm real similar... I have an early generation P4 pickup in my 4 string..... the New P5 Ave Amria bass... got a HUGE thumbs up from an engineer that i really trust.. Jimmy made me some new P4 pickups that are in my desk.. but the bass sounds so good that i dont want to change it .. But i will ..

thanks Pete, you know you're more than welcome to come check it out! The neck profile is somewhere between my RA and your LM which is nice cause I really love how fat yours is but it would be a far leap from my RA....and Mitch, I'm pretty sure it has no finish! If it does, it's some kind of super light oil-like varnish cause it just feels like bare wood! I'm sure when I put similar gauge strings on it I'll be able to tell the spacing difference a lot more but I can def tell the difference in pickup length....Jimmy just basically shaved off half an inch in both directions but the pole pieces line up the same....
Mitch, maybe that finish is that newer water based Hippy one?
Also, along with the pup length difference, I believe there is a slightly smaller neck width carve to accomodate the tighter spacing. I THINK I remember Jimmy mentioning that and it does feel like it on my TB.
As far as beefier neck , I'm going to speculate right now (and I will ask Jimmy about it next month), but I'm thinking he may keep a little meat on the shoulders of the TB necks to make up for a narrower width carve. My TB has meatier shoulders than any of my other ACs current or past, and I was wondering about that.....
...but if I'm wrong about the neck width carve then there's probebly nothing deliberate for the profile either.

I noticed recently playing that the response-attack on my 2 LG 5 basses are different ( all things considered like finishes, body woods etc. etc. ) from the seemingly quicker response from the Hip Shot on my LM 5.
Too, I am finding the saddles on the Hip Shot to be more secure and stable and less vulnerable to a hard attack, which I sometimes employ.
Any of you out there have comments and or experiences with the 2 different bridge types on the AC basses, on any models ?
Generally, I have seen the bent plate appearing more on the LG5 model, obviously for its period correct feature, and rarely on the
LM5 or on the RA5.
I am contemplating contacting Jimmy to see if the Hip Shot will directly replace a bent plate bridge, OR are they 2 different placed ( body holes ) bridges and not retro-fittable??
I am very curious to try a Hip Shot on the LG 5 Supreme.
I noticed on another thread a beautiful Sea Foam Green LG5 Supreme a player in Europe had just acquired.

You can swap around the Hipshot B style-Hipshot vintage and the bent plate bridges without issue they all have the same 4 bolt pattern.
You can even try a Badass as well as the inside 4 bolts are also identical but you'll have to drill for the outside bolts if you like it.

I think he's talking about Jimmy's bent plate, and I could be wrong, but I thought I remembered a post a long time ago that did say the hole patterns were different.
