Club Alleva-Coppolo (Part 19)

Another great Jimmy customer service story. I bought an LM off of eBay that was literally dead mint. For whatever reason though, the truss rod wasn't working. I don't think it was snapped but just wasn't engaging enough to straighten the neck enough for me.

I sent it to Jimmy to work on and he gave me a whole new neck. The new one is beautiful too. It has white blocks and double binding (white nearest to the fretboard; black next to that.) The double binding is beautiful -- I'll post some pics of the bass later.

Anyway, I'm really happy. Jimmy certainly didn't have to do that -- especially considering the bass came from eBay.

The bass smokes. It's as stunning to look at as it is to play. It's hard to put your finger on what it is exactly but these basses just have some mojo. It really is like playing a great 70's Fender with an extra string.

I know you guys get this but, as far as 5 string vintage-styled J basses go, nothing else touches these AC's (IMHO.)

The LG5 & LM5. He has body ready for "Hippie P", but still working on the neck.

Vol-Blend (VB) vs Vol-Vol (VV)...

I'll try to keep this short, and leave out tech details, but just understand this has been SUPER beaten to death here on TB, so none of this should be new at all...

First of all, moving from VV to VB gains you the convenience of a master volume and a more convenient way to set a blend point. The price you pay is tone and some range of adjustment, and due to the way the blend pots work, most of the significant adjustment is often over a very short range, making it a little touchy to get it exactly right if you're someone who really does a lot with many different specific blend settings.

The reason is you're moving from a two potentiometer circuit to a three potentiometer circuit, and the way it works out, the pickups "see each other" more. That's the loading part, and yes, it can affect high end (in theory, it actually affects more than that, but that's probably what might be most noticeable to a human ear... and it's highly dependent on pickup wind, too).

HOWEVER...

It's been my PRACTICAL experience that the tonal sacrifice is pretty small, especially in a live performance where fine nuance is often lost in the less than perfect listening environment, and the blending "sensitivity" is something I'm used to... so the practical gains offered to me outweigh the costs.

Just understand this is going to be a HIGHLY subjective decision. The above works for me.

So, let me first preface this by saying "shut up Tom" (Bowlus) :), but you'll never get me to disagree that VV is superior... it is. I just think it's highly debatable how superior it is, which is completely dependent on players' pref/style. I think that's really the crux of it all.

Check out how sexy this binding is. The touch of black really works!

First, thanks for specifying which Tom. ;)

Second, thanks for the great explanation. Even *I* was able to follow that. So it's not an extra flux capacitor after all? Great Scott, Marty!

Third, I play with both pickups on full most of the time on most my basses anyway, so blend vs. vol-vol is usually a non-issue on those basses anyway. But I agree with you: in live settings, there's a lot more going on with our sound than a third potentiometer circuit.

Some of my basses are vol / vol, and some have a blend, and I have a strong preference for vol / vol...

I just wish I could have a bass that has vol / vol (stacked) and a MASTER volume.

Then again, I wish we didn't have to get health challenges as we grow old, and that God had never thought of creating mosquitoes. :hmm:

I'm not sure this is completely true, which is another thing to keep in mind (though I can't find a schematic to explain why at the moment... this is just from memory). It may also greatly depend on what kind of pots you use... whether they're "no load" etc. Point is, I don't think we can generally say it's always true that a fully blended config is the same as Vol-Vol with both maxed.
