Especially when you see the price tag! They are scary good though -- a worthwhile splurge IMO if you have the cash.

Yes, same basic build, same pickups I believe. When you bypass the preamp in an active bass, it is a true bypass. It doesn't turn the preamp off, it literally takes it out of the signal chain (which is why you need to unplug an active instrument when you aren't using it, since that turns off the preamp).
So, other than the impact of specific pieces of wood, a passive version of one of Jimmy's basses will sound the same as an active model with the preamp bypassed.
No advantage to not having a preamp with bypass other than cost (and simplicity of control layout if you NEVER play in active mode).
+1, and my comments are based on the information posted in the past that the pickups and basic builds are the same as the 'higher end' models. That is an assumption at this point, since these models are not fully described on the website, and haven't been talked about for quite a whi.e
As Kjung said, It's the same PU, same everything minus the preamp in the chain. The only extra "difference" if small, from a LG or Resurrection is the lack of paint on the bass. Some may say it breathes better, some say its no difference...
+1 for the CA9. I went through a phase of various preamp/poweramp rigs and the dynamics of the CA9, at least to me, seemed noticeably superior... even to the Crowns I tried, and thare ain't nuthin' wrong with a Crown!!

I just received my first AC yesterday and it's a beauty. I'm so impressed with this bass. My only concern before receiving it was the narrower spacing, being most comfortable with 19mm. I did a minor set-up and after playing it for the first ten minutes, my concern disappeared. It is so easy to play and the slightly slimmer neck is extremely comfortable. What I've heard about these basses is true. This bass is new, but right out of the box it felt broken in and I was right at home.

Well... the LR's moved me in the right direction, but still... not quite where I wanted to be. So .... (and here's where I give Ken a coronary) I dug up an old used set of Rotosound swing 66's that i saved for some reason...BINGO!!! (Update: Currently using Ernie Ball Regular Slinky NICKELS... killer mids - outstanding on this build, unless you're shooting for straight up Marcus)
Mid-Range. Now, I know Roto's don't get much love around here these days (where's Narud when i need him), but jeeze, what a match made in heaven!!!. I now have that nice eeeuuuurrr to work with when i play. And a 'center' to the notes. Sounds like a modern version of a 60's build going for that same character mids tonal center, but, new(er 70's) school all the way. Plenty of cut and foundational support without having to sacrifice the mids to do it . A finger style players dream. Tons of character to play around with. I even back off the Neck pickup about 4/5 minutes back from dimed... takes the widness out of the low end just enough for focus (edit: and no, it's not a 'Jaco sound'). And... the great thing is that over time, should i find myself morphing to a more standard 70's thing (a touch scooped and brighter more open sound) it's right there too with a change of strings. Really versatile build.
Now, I've read about guys adding in bass (room dependent) and while i haven't gigged this bass yet, i don't see myself going beyond dimed pickups and the tone controls flat. It's just all there, stout but articulate and light on it's feet without being thin/bright or too heavy/low present ....just friggin perfect. Really speaks.
Build notes: LM TB model (smokin neck feel), 10.5 lbs and uses Jimmy's beta vintage bridge.
The notes just jump off the board.

Heya AC peeps. Just a quick line that I'm looking to trade my LM5 for a LG5 or LG4 if anyone is interested in switching things up. I put it up in the classifieds. Not looking to outright sell at this time. My gig schedule has gone nuts this year -up to 4-7 nights a week (4-5 hours a night!), session work, etc- and the weight of that ash/maple tone monster (11.3 lbs) landed me at the doctor, in PT for my shoulder, and on a 4-string p-bass that weighs under 9 lbs. It's just too much for my workload. If I were doing mostly sessions and 2-3 nights a week? No way I move it. Details are there, but if any of you esteemed members of the AC brotherhood are intersted, reach out. Not looking for anything outside the brand nearly as much.

You are correct.. CA is super nice..If anyone can ever try an old Crown PSA2. I highly recommend it.. Its bigger sounding than the Macro Series which was and still is the touring choice for many sound companies.They weigh as much an SVT... But , it has that CA sledge hammer with super transient and silky dynamics.. Showco used them for years in their stadium rigs. But who wants a 4 space 80 pound amp to go do a club gig these days... lol... maybe the youngsters here. but i cant...

Used my Kbp4 on a metal session yesterday. Metal is not my thing. but the P bass just killed it... and flats too... Flats on a P split to a REDDI DI, Evil Twin DI and a Marshall 100 had that Ozzie Crazy Train sort of vibe.. I have to say I really dug it...
You called it. The last Crown I had was a Macro Tech 600. Really nice amp, but the CA9 (and probably the CA6) woulda' destroyed it in an A/B test.
