For all the time I've known him his main recording basses are 4 string Fenders- especially the white 66 J. There are a few tracks on the last Jam. album with the LG5 but that was mostly the '66. I think live he just does not want to switch basses to cover the tunes he needs the 5 for.

Makes sense... plus, I wonder if he might have some comfort issues touring with the vintage instruments? I know there's "safe" ways to do so, but still... especially when the LG is so great, and a live mix doesn't have to bear as much scrutiny as a studio mix.

Paul does tour with the '66..its in the rack most of the time when I've seen him and in pics. I cant vouch if he brings it 100% of the time though. I believe it was there also for Annie Lennox.

I have to agree in part with Narud, there is nothing like a great Fender 4...but some of these Fender-y 5s get very close and (for me) opens the door to using a 5. I like B strings, so thats why I'm so drawn to the best Jazz 5s I can find.

Paul's white LG5 was up for sale for ages at a shop here in the UK called Bass Gear for ages for a pretty wild price.
It sold eventually, but it was way overpriced.
They're pricy enough without having to pay the "used by" premium on top.
Maybe some of that magic WOULD rub off though!

Yes, I have, and no (of course, every bass sounds a little different in general). The current 'thin poly' is very thin and little different from the nitro in that respect).

Primary difference IMO is a certain 'organic glow' to the nitro that the poly doesn't have (more shiny and even), and of course, the nitro will wear, chip and ding much faster than the poly.

There are many FBass owners who have refinished their BN basses from the original nitro (which REALLY used to check and chip on those basses) with thin poly, and there has not been ONE person who has reported a tonal change.

When I talked to Jimmy a few years ago, he said there might be a 2% difference that many people won't hear. He actually steered my toward a poly finish for my LM4.

I am in the camp it the feel/organic glow that is the nitro difference more that any tone in most cases.

I think his custom Alleva LG5 and his beloved Jazz bass..
I played his jazz when he was in town with Annie lenox.. The top end on that bass its ridiculous in a good way....
I have some proto pickups Jimmy sent me to demo out .. I called them PT pickups.. looking to match that tone of pauls old jazz.. Its real freaking close!

He got a new one about a year ago from jimmy with nearly identical specs.... still oly white... with dalbergia RW FB

Hey Kirk,
If I recall correctly the fingerboard on his new one is Honduran RW... I played it before it was shipped. I almost got it on my own LG because I loved Paul's so much... There was some added high end clarity that I really dug.

I played an LG with the Honduran board a while back believe, and it did add some nice snap to the tone. VERY nice.

Wow, you snagged it. Congrats ! I only waited for a shipping quote and they didn't came over with it - otherwise I would have bought it yesterday...

I chatted with Billy Jackson from cornermusic about the finish and he told me that it is Poly, not Nitro...?! Otherwise it would be an LG5 CLASSIC, not a Standard.

Anyway - my dream 5er !
