My LG has the Jimmywood board, thin Poly and Hipshot bridge which seem to make mine snappier than the average... I just love it specially since my LM is still in the works... Helps me not miss that snap so much. I actually tried Jimmy's new proprietary vintage bridge on it but went back to the Hipshot because I missed the snap.
The LG I had for a while had a honduran board, loved that bass. I wouldn't call it the most vintage sounding but a great gigging bass...

I'm sure a DN board would be even more faithful, but honestly, I have NO tonal issues, and I'm already non-bent-plate and non-nitro, so I'm not worried about absolutely max'ing out the faithful thing.
That's the bass! Amazing instrument. I'm not as big a fan of the LG's as others, but man, THAT one was killer. I see why Paul got that spec.

Vic. There was no tonal issue with the bass it was a really great sounding bass. If I did an LG again I would consider the Honduran board. Just saying if your goal is that real authentic early 60s jazz which jimmy is known for the Honduran is probably not the right choice.
First rehearsal down, and the AC sounded great through my practice rig (MB Tube800 and Acme Low B2)

Yeah, I didn't mean to comment on the Honduran thing. I don't think I've ever played one. Just offering up that, to be truly faithful, someone would probably have to go DN, but at least I don't think it'd have to be DN to be "faithful enough", and at least last time I checked, which has been a while, Indian was his "stock" board unless you specify otherwise and possibly pay an upcharge. Bottom line is, as I've mentioned before, I think his "Standard" basses pretty much "get you there" without having to specify expensive options like the DN board, bent plate, etc.
Hey Vic, apparently the standard wood is apparently Indonesian now.
Speaking of woods, does anyone have any pics of a "jimmy wood" fingerboard? I've seen some amazing Indian and DN boards on here.. I think i saw someones bass with "Jimmy wood" fingerboard, but i cant quite remember.. Can anyone comment on it?

Ahhh, ok. Do you know if that was that primarily for availability, or because he felt it was a closer tonal match to DN? No biggie, just curious.
For reference I did have a KBP 5 with DN, nitro and a bent plate. It was certainly a killer bass and very vintage sounding. But it was by no means a magic bullet. I guess we are always looking for the most authentic sounding 5 string version of a classic P or J is why we're all throwing money at jimmy.
For me it was a difference between what keeps me awake at night dreaming about and then what actually works on stage.
im starting to realize that the maple in the necks on old fenders is what gives them their sound moreso than the brazillian board. i have a 62 j with a slab board and a 64 p with a thin veneer board. both basses have super fat low mids. ive put modern necks on the old basses and they immediately became leaner sounding. the 64 fattened up a basswood fernandes body i had laying around. i havent found that kind of response in newer basses.
Yeah, for better/worse, for some people, including myself, only the high end instruments can really give me the playability and tonal joy I crave for maximum inspiration. Clearly not the case for everyone, but at least it is for me.
It is a hybrid. A blend of two wood species. Jimmy offers it as an up-charge..

Interesting. Everybody seems to spend a lot of time worrying about Rosewood. On the Ken Smith Bass forum he talks about hard Sugar Maple.. This is the same type of maple jimmy uses?
Given that G&L "saddle lock bridge" is Leo's last invention. Has any body been experimenting using the bridge in any AC 4 string? Will it sound just like JB?
