The tone from these 2 amps is just pure bliss. I am a big fan of the SVT, but there is a nice open quality inherint in both of it's little brothers. I feel that the mids come through alot sweeter with the B-15 and V4. The SVT just pounds your chest in--which is great for alot of stuff--but, for me, the mids are king. I would love to use the B-15 for everything, but it just doesn't hold up in a loud setting. The 100 watt V-4 might not be enough for everyone, but for me, it's more than enough volume.

Thanks Nicky. I've been looking for a v4b for a little while. Low power isn't a problem as I just want it for practicing in the basement and the occasional jam. There's an old B-15N available locally but the price is a bit high.

Well said Ken. I've found that certain amps/combos work really well at reducing the AC single coil hum, while other rigs are noisy as as hell! The hum is practically undetectable coming through my eden combo, my friend's littlemark2, and the GB stuff I've played through, while SWR setups seem to amplify the hum beyond the point of stupidity. That being said, I always try to play through the best rigs possible and have very clean, conditioned power. A high quality transparent rig, set flat is the way to go for me...since i don't own any old school tube stuff. :) B15!

Mine can take a beating. The low B is no problem. There are a ton of different versions, and there are little schematic changes that can make them behave in alot of different ways.

Mine has a tube rectifier, so it will keep up in rehearsals for a few hours, then it starts to sag and loose some clean headroom.

I hear what you're saying, Ken. However, I tend to view the amp as a part of the instrument and like having it affect the tone. Different strokes, you know. The LM5 should sound great through just about any amp though--so you know that you're going to get a great tone no matter what.

+1.. we all have different tone goals, and I can totally see where the B15 and Alleva would just kill for a certain vibe and context!

Many belated thanks for replies on passive v. active on 4 and on neck adjuctment--I have the right tools now. I have been out of town, but it does sound like preamp probably a good idea.

This is no reissue, it's an original 1972 in very nice shape though it has a wart or two. Nothing major though.

Bass Boy,

I actually gigged it tonight, but with the Ampeg only. The B15N sounds amazing with my Rob Allen MB2 (that's actually why I bought the Ampeg). Usually I have a few pop/rock gigs at this time of year, but so far only jazz. Not that I'm complaining...:cool:

I'll have to call Jimmy I guess if you guys don't know the answer -I've asked it before, but is Jimmy selling just the the P pick-up for the 5 string????

Or if anyone talks to him soon, ask him and post it up!! (please!)

For what its worth I inquired about having AC PUPS (Jazz) and a pre installed in a non Alleva bass and Jimmy was VERY cool about it. I would imagine if he has some made up he would probably sell them to you ESPECIALLY since you already own an Alleva.

Stevie is the Man... I think he played for about 2:20 He got them all in there (ok no contusion).

Highlights for me was,Talk With God, Isn't she Lovely.

Iesha (sp) is touring with him singing backgrounds and one feature.


Isn't She was a amazing moment, proof of the positive power of music. I mean here's this tune which, by it's self ,stands as a testament of love. Performed for 10000+ people who all know every note and most of whom are of the age to have children. Being sung to the grown women for whom it was written. Who was glowing in a way you can't act..

One of the few concerts that I missed and wished I hadn't was the Stevie Wonder/Rolling Stones 'small theatre' tour sometime in the early 70's. I actually was offered a ticket and turned it down, thinking....'why would I want to see that?':rollno: I was going through an unfortunate 'Coltrane' phase at the time:(:bawl:


That looks like a fabulous show. Nate just 'looks like a bass player' to me... his still photo's still communicate a groove IMO!

Andrew, I was there too, man. Last night in Atlantic City, right? I wish I would have known that you would be there...we could have met up.

The show was inspiring, man. The whole band was killer. That was a cool version of 'Spain' where the whole band got to take a chorus.

I couldn't make out which bass he was playing either.

Yeah, I've been known to do that. :) I can't keep track of my days. I saw them on Saturday in Atlantic City. Great show.
