Club Alleva Coppolo (Part 7)

Just to keep whipping the well aged horse here...

*If* one were to "control plate" An LM5 for example...one would have to move the holes for the controls. The first vol control is too close to the p/g to get a standard control plate in there.
*Then,* would you want a standard three hole version for v/v/passive tone, and leave the AC's active t/b "unplated?"
Or, go to a 4 hole control plate, and stack them?
(and, I think having "standard, all in line controls" vs the current '3+2' used now would really detract from the inherent visual identity AC has due in part to the current scheme...you can look at any photo of an AC bass-and not see the headstock-but immediately recognise it from the control layout, ya dig?)

I dunno...I think they're just fine the way they are, and I'm very traditionalist.

Therefore it would look different yet vintage like. I say the 3+2 would still look good and not distract. In fact it would give his basses still a clear difference. Nobody is saying the Sadowsky Bass is too close to the fender. Do you think the control plate would immediately make the Alleva Coppolo a fender? I still say many of the people who are against it may just order it if it were an option. I love Jimmys Basses and he knows that. He did great fret work on my basses long before the Alleva Coppolo bass (as he did with many many players). His original NY shop had vintage vintage vintage. There is no question he loves the vintage "back in the day" basses. Even amps. But when I see the pickguard cut near the controls in a way that looks like a plate would fit perfectly tells me he has something up his sleeve.... Ill buy one. If you don't, thats fine, no disrespect here. And if he decides not too Im fine with that to. Its just an option. Im still waiting on those pickup plates or guards. Ill buy one of them the day they are ready..................

So let me ask a question, since this type of comment has come up before...

If the guard were cut more circularly to follow the shape of the knobs, maybe even beveled... or maybe just cut in some other way... the net result of which being possibly eliminating this sense that it's designed to mate with something that's "missing", would you feel differently?

Per my previous post on issues with Nitro and various cases, I guess I'll just have to take the plunge. The LG/Nitro is in the Mono case (REALLY nice case), and I guess I'll just keep an eye on the bottom of the bass and the back of the neck where it is in contact with that 'mesh' material, and see what happens.

+1.. I'm continuing my tradition of 'taking one for the team'.

The Mono Case guys were 'pretty sure' that none of the case material they use would interact with 'most' Nitro finishes, but I guess there are a LOT of variables involved regarding the exact chemical make-up of the Nitro used and also the case material.

Hey, what the heck... maybe this will be my first minor 'relic' job:D:bassist:

Hey Ken, I don't think you have much to risk. Just make sure you get the thing out on a regular basis (if it's a bass that sits a lot... due to the LM being your go-to bass). There's always a "dulling" that precedes any serious damage, and as soon as you see that, it's still very easy to buff and/or polish it back and then note that the case isn't safe.

So the thing with Nitro and certain cases.... you probably don't want to use the Incase gigbag if you have Nitro. It left mesh marks on my co-workers bass (I was about to get his bass, but got XavidmanX's CAOJ instead). It left marks on the back of the neck, top of the horn, and on the bottom of the bass right around the strap button.

BUT disclaimer is that he left his bass sitting in the case for several months; probably 6 to 7 months cuz he didn't play it for that long and I discovered the marks on the finish when he brought it to work for me to try.

That's only the older models, which you can't get anymore. The newer models all have a fur lining, which I think is safe (tho anyone concerned should verify that with inCase).

They haven't had the mesh model for years. I've been doing the inCase thing for a while now... there's lots more to that story, but that's another thread. :)

On Topic...

This bass has been stored in this case for a year. It has Nito finnish and the case is a fender tweed re issue looking case that originally had a Roscoe Beck.

I'm not in the same town as this bass,Am I screwed?

The inCase stuff is pricey... definitely, but I swear by them. The only bag I like as much is the Sadowsky Portabag, and that's only for the added storage it has. If you dig hard cases, they definitely won't fill that role, but if you want a lightweight semi-rigid case that's easy to manage (size/shape), inCase is among the best of the best.

Hmmmmmmmmmmm Thats a good question...... At the moment I would answer no I would not suggest a plate.
I was talking to kirk and he said Tommix has a bass that has a sort of different pickguard. I would like to see it.

You must be talking about the beveled guard I had on my 3 TS Standard 4?? I was not too sure about it until I actually got it and it was really a nice touch! Andy (AJ BROWN) has that bass now because it is a 4 banger and I am only playing 5's now. That was probably the best 4 string I have ever had in my hands and I miss it everyday but I had to have a 5....Maybe he can chime in and put up some pics for you?? I have a couple here:
