I have never been a fan of black blocks and binding. No offense to those who like that scheme. Black blocks and binding just looks cheaper to me. It doesn't look anywhere near as rich or regal as pearl blocks and white binding to me. (IMO) For me, I'd personally start with pearl blocks and then ask what body color do I like with that vibe?
My choice options, in no particular order would be;
3T Sunburst
Tobacco Burst ('59 burst)
Natural
Harvest Gold
Oly White
I like how black basses look with a white pearl Pickguard/Maple FB with Pearl blocks too. But I take issue with fingerprints and smudges on black finishes. Besides, I like how light colors take stage lights. (i.e. Oly White, Harvest Gold, Natural)

I'm with you on the black blocks and binding. Personal taste there, I guess.
I don't really like the look of blocks at all, except the pearl blocks and binding on a natural ash bass. I like that a lot.
Peter, have you considered just binding. That looks great on one of Jimmy's basses with simple dots on the fretboard.
Actually I never even thought about the binding only on an LM but I will. I am leaning towards Natural as well, like Jonno's

That natural with pearl blocks and binding is just beautiful. If I was sold on blocks and binding, that's the one I'd get (Jonno's).
+1 There is a picture up somewhere on one of the earlier AC threads that shows that old winding machine. I think Jimmy's girlfriend wound my LM5 pickups from what I've been told. I attribute its great tone mostly to that
Like i said earlier i am not sure how he is doing them now. But my PU's were done the same way. Either Jimmy or his lady did them.

In case anyone else is thinking about joining the club, I'm likely putting my black LG4 on the market. Great bass that gets no love 'cuz it's living in a house with an LG5 fretless, and an RA5 that I love more than any other bass I've ever played. The specs are:
Black poly finish
21 stainless steel frets
Indian rosewood board
Alder body
Poly finish on the neck
This bass sounds huge!!! It is an excellent player in pristine condition (it rarely sees the light of day). It will ship in a spiffy Protec case (that has a slightly pooched zipper but is still quite functional). I will likely be asking around $3K, and though technically this is (and will actually be soon) a classified, the custom has been to give a "head's up" here first to keep it in the "Famiglia", as Jimmy likes to put it.

Personal taste indeed - pearloid reminds me of the gaudy types of finishes that you'd see on an accordian. I far prefer the simpler understated look of black. Not to mention the visual aid when you need to have a quick look to make sure your fingers are where they are supposed to be
. Ahhh... to each their own, and I am casting my official vote for Peter's LM to be a natural finish, with black PG, black blocks, and black binding. I'd even be thinking black hardware if available, though possibly a bent plate bridge for a slightly more open sound.

looking bass I have ever owned... and I have owned a
LOT of basses.!!
The economy sucks and my wife
had fusion surgery 3 weeks ago so some of my basses
might have to go. My RA-5 is 'ain't goin nowhere'.
BTW....I turned 54 (yesterday) on July 7th
I got my first bass on September 7th
(yes I remenber the day) 1971...so thats almost 38 years and I have had such a great time playing music!!
My 14 year old Grandson wants me to teach him how to play bass.
I paid for his guitar lessons for a year now he want's to play bass
I bought him a SX P Bass and a Peavey Max Amp and
we start lessons on Thursday.

Couldn't help myself... that CAR LM5 that was listed on Brian Barrett's site is now mine. It will arrive mid next week.
I have my beloved Harvest Gold LM5 in another city, and will really enjoy having an LM at home in Detroit to keep my LG company.

I love these basses (LM's) SO much, and have sold off so much other stuff (amps, basses, cabs) over the last 12 months, that I have quite a war-chest at the moment. It's fun to keep an eye out for something very specific (like that LM in a color I really like) and be able to take the plunge when it shows up.

Nope. He decided to stick with his LEJ, from what Brian said. So, I just bought it from Brian. Brian's price was reasonable (he originally had it listed for quite a high price, but was mistakenly using a more tricked out version as his basis for that).
