+1 I know Jimmy has recently tried to name all this stuff with separate models. However, I find it easier to think of these basses similar to Sadowsky. With Sadowsky, there's the Modern, the P, the Vintage and the Standard, and then you can do whatever you want within those general categories (pickup placement, fancy wood tops, different wood combinations, etc.).
With Jimmy's basses, I think of them as an LM (classic ash/maple/70's) and an LG (classic alder/RW/60's), and I guess the RA (which is kind of a specialty spec based on that late 60's/early 70's transition), and of course the P.
Then, you can do whatever you want... 60's position on an LM, 70's position on an LG, RW board on an LM, fancy top with or without guard on the LG or LM, 5 string, 4 string, bent plate bridge, etc., etc.
Once you start trying to name all those combinations (again, other than the RA, which is meant to be a special spec I guess), you can quickly go crazy!
So what does it all mean? This seems to be a big secret, either a players initials like Larry Graham or is it Jimmy's relatives?

Somebody posted about what the letters stand for, but I've long forgotten. There was a bit of a competition to guess the origins of the letters on an early A-C thread. Jimmy continues to be a little coy about it. I guess that makes sense, since there would be some licensing issues possibly if he was too exact about it.
My guess is 'LM' means 'Let me' play that thing, and LG means 'Let Go' of that so I can play it! (at least IME at our GTG's!)
I never paid much attention to 60's era Fenders. I've never heard of the LG initials used for that era. What does it mean?
"L series" fenders are the 63-early65 jazz basses. Named that way because their serial numbers start with "L"

Excellent!!!!! I love that clip... a little bass boost, favor the bridge pickup a bit, dig in at the bridge, and let's swing!!! That's a GREAT performance of Anthropology. I totally dig it!

That makes sense, like 'G&L' but switched around.
My memory is returning on this. Some hypothesized that the LM stood for 'Larry and Marcus', but who knows. I'm not even sure if Larry Graham's Moon basses were fashioned after 70's J models though. I never paid that much attention back in the day.
Thanks Ken! This is actually the one that Gary Roberts was unable to take delivery on. I took over his order. Of course, he wanted 3TS/nitro, and I wanted CAOJ/poly. Jimmy was amazing about taking the bass out of the nitro painter's queue (which involved stripping off a layer of primer) and getting it to his poly painter. He was incredibly gracious about the whole thing, and never 'suggested' that I start with a fresh order. The great thing is that Gary had already ordered the "bound n' dots" scheme (which I would have ordered anyway), so that part worked out.
Can't wait to receive it!

I'm still undecided on mine. I really do like the look either way. I'll prolly put it on there eventually tho, and not bother with the fancy shmancy non-permanent thing. Get out my little micro drill press dealio and go for it screws and all..

See, I'm typically not all that big on pickguards. I had originally told Jimmy that I wasn't even interested in one, and he kinda pushed me to at least wait until I'd seen pics to decide. As soon as I received these, I called him and told him that he was right; as much as I love the color and the 'naked' look, it definitely needs something.
As for your bass, with the transparent 3TS and the wood visible, I still like the naked look. I think my bass is too uniform to pull off the guardless thing, but I still like yours showin' as much wood as possible!
