I'm going back and forth in my mind about whether I want to stay with the satin neck on my order or change it to a gloss neck. (I believe from the pics that Gil's is satin and Jonno's is gloss, not sure though.) The only LM5 I've played is Ken's which has a satin neck which I love the tone of, but I like the look of the gloss. Any idea if that would change the tone at all?

Hey Jason, They both sounded great, we both really dug the open-ness of the satin finish LM, However, Jonno's LM had nickel round strings, and my LM had a fresh set of DR Marcus Miller sig strings. So I don't think it was a fair comparison.

I think Ken's LM and my LM were built during the same batch in NYC, and mysteriously Jonno and I feel that the NYC builds may have something a little special going on...:confused: maybe cause we're both from NYC :confused: :eyebrow:

Anyone else have opinions on gloss vs. satin necked LM's?

Hard to attribute tone differences across instruments, since so much is going on. However, my gloss finish RA has a MUCH more present upper sizzle (like the gloss necked Celinders we had) versus the nice 'classic J growl' of my LM with satin neck. I'm am not sure at all if the gloss neck is driving that or not, but it seems like it has at least some part in the 'upper treble click'.

I prefer the satin neck myself. The feel is amazing.. almost like a worn nitro neck, or an old oil finished neck.

My recent Inca Silver LG5 custom with a maple neck and board had a nitro gloss on the neck and fingerboard. it too had a glassy top end.. so maybe the gloss has a little to do with it... I like treble. but i like sheen treble and not the clicky 2k thing...

The gloss finish on the neck and FB Just wasn't my thing, so Jimmy re-necked it for me with a dalbergia RW neck.. its killer now..

I also have an early 70s jazz with a maple board.. i had it refretted years ago by jimmy...i didnt want the fingerboard to have a finish on it at the time so i left it plain wood... well weather would make me have to tweak the truss rod all the time so i sprayed a thin nitro satin sealer on it.. just enough to seal the pores of the wood... but still have an almost bare wood feel...
That bass is sick. and for a maple board it has just as warm a tone as any RW jazz that i have played but has the maple focus and note point.. i also found that just because a neck is RW doesn't mean 100% it has to be dull or dark sounding ...

I think i want to get an LM5 with a hand oiled Birdseye FB. that is if Jimmy will do a hand oiled board.. if not a satin would be nice...

Okay, you guys definitely have me leaning towards staying with the satin neck.

With all the basses I've had over the years, this is my first custom bass ordered new by me...the anticipation is killing me!

LM was burnin' this weekend... growly and punchy, with that nice '70's NOT on steriod' snap up top. Punchy and grindy and articulate. Every gig I do with this bass makes me appreciate it more.... beautiful mid response, VERY useful on-board tone controls while still staying relatively 'passive' sounding, wonderful light weight, and a unique (to me) balance between the G and D string and the E and B string... much fatter at the G and D, and less 'big and boomy' at the E and B than other basses (boutique J's included) that I've owned. The bass sounds like it has 'one very long string'...i.e., beautiful, even volume and tonal transition from the highest notes to the lowest. Pretty cool!

I've got a satin finish on my LG5 and am having a satin finish put on my LM5 order as well even though the fingerboard and headstock will have a tinted gloss finish.

I'm in the same boat, I've owned a number of nice basses over the years but never ordered and waited. I placed my order for the LM5 back in May, it should be ready sometime in November. Man it's a long wait, I'm not sure what I will day dream about when it actually arrives...

That is the main thing that started giving me GAS for an A/C. When I had played your LM5 in various GTG's I never really noticed how balanced it was top to bottom. But when you let me borrow it and use it on a couple gigs, specifically right after I had been gigging my Celinder for almost a year straight, I REALLY noticed how perfectly balanced the LM5 was in comparison. While slapping I could do a thump on the E string followed by a pluck on the G string with no different in volume in the mix at all. On other basses when you pluck the G string you get a high treble sheen that sounds fine in a solo context, bot won't be heard at all in a live mix with cymbals and the snare drum, etc. On that LM5 though, I could pluck and still have that punchy jazz grind. Your description of it sounding like it has one very long string is perfect - when playing fingerstyle I could play a walking line up or down three strings and have it sound perfectly even and not hear the shift. Just amazing.

Cool! I'm sure I missed it somewhere in all these A/C threads, but what are the rest of the specs for your LM5 order?
