last time i was at the shop i played a couple of alder 5's and they were really light. maybe, barely 9 pounds. couldve been in the 8 pound range. hes doing a great job keeping the weight down on the lg's.

My LG is from NYC, and weighs 9lbs 3-4 oz.
I don't really want a 5 string a whole lot lighter than ~9 lbs, I think that starts impacting tone in weighs I don't like. YMMV, etc.

Hey guys quick question..the basses Jimmy has at NAMM..are most of them spoken for "typically"...i am moving some stuff and im considering an used LM5 or checkin out what Jimmy will have at NAMM..im goin to try and call him tomorrow..just thought id ask around here first..

I like a mid 8lb weight for 5 strings...I don't feel that I sacrifice any tone with that half pound, but my back appreciates the difference after 3 or 4 hours!

The LPB jazz looks like an earlier one - different bridge, only 4 knobs, and a metal control plate. Nice looking instrument, and i'd like to know more about if the owner is lurking nearby.

Mike - Jimmy generally has stuff available at shows, how much varies from show to show. Best thing to do of course is ask him, though I know there are a few guys here picking up instruments at NAMM.

I've noticed that there are a couple different headstock shapes amongst the A-C basses. Some are more fat and some are more thin and pointy.

Was there a certain time that the headstock shape changed?

Are the current ones the fat ones or the pointier ones?

Is it an option to get one or the other?

Here's a picture of what I mean. Look at the two four strings on the right. I've seen this difference in five strings and between P and J style. What's with it?

So, what are the Alder body 5's coming in at weight wise? I am really gassin for an LG...

My LG5 is pretty much right at 9 pounds. IMHO, that's perfect.

Those look like they may have been Kirk's basses - pretty sure the light blue P is the "Poodah" bass. Maybe he can shed some light...

When I spoke to Jimmy last week he was planning on having a natural LM5 at NAMM, it was not spoken for at that time...

I like the bigger headstock. Funny because, if you search back years ago, I commented on how ugly the "gumby" headstock looked.

When I spoke to Jimmy last week he said that he definitely had some basses that were NOT spoken for that would be at NAMM. One of them sounded f'in smoking, but he wanted to keep it on the DL until it is revealed at NAMM. I think he said he had a number of 5's, mostly LM's.

Hopefully the new (and hopefully very happy) owner of my CAR RA5 will eventually post up when he gets the bass this week!

I'm really disappointed with the black beauty strings on the RA. I've learned that they are coated low riders in 45-105 makes a string that is not nearly as slap friendly as I hoped.They're also very compressed sounding. They look so freakin bad ass though.

The P is nitro alder/delbergia and is sporting GHS Stainless Steel precision flats = Happy thumpy w/ some sustain

The white J is nitro alder/indian. Ken Smith Compressors which are a nickel, ground wound 044 - .105 = awesome combo

The Sunburst is nitro delbergia/alder has Nickel Low riders 40-100 ,,,,to slinky. I will bump up to 45-105 youguys are right though I think that string with a couple of months on it will be great on this bass.

Black bass is Poly maple/alder has the BB 45-105. I will switch to Hi beams 45-105.


So I'm trying to get a nice progression of tones from thump to twang all while complementing the axes natural thing.

And, what is width at nut on your P-bass?
I'm also, a fan of Ken Smith Compressors.
