Okay the black KPB5 I knew about - sweet bass, and caused me to order a KPB5 too. But the blue one? What the heck is that? Were we notified?

Kirk's blue one is his LPB LG-5, it used to have a rosewood board. Jimmy made him a maple neck for it about 9 months ago or so.
I'm not even sure he has it anymore. I think he kinda sorta replaced it with the Inca Silver one. You know, the one he swapped necks with the Black KBP5.
Oh and to whomever started talking about settings before, my money tone now is something like this: bridge pickup rolled off like 5%, tone rolled off like 30%, and bass boosted a hair. I love the slap tone like this. Definitely un-marcusy.

I did my first gig Saturday night with my LG-5 using the Genz Benz -- I've done some other gigs with it but through my big (i.e., no PA reinforcement for bass) rig (1980-vintage SVT + 4-10"s) -- and I think I'm now officially in love. This bass just has the right balance between bottom, top, and middle, finger-style and popping both. Raves from the other players for clarity, and I had a great time with it. Running passive, both pickups all the way up, passive tone control all the way up. I did take it in today for setup, I think to get rid of the final effects of the cross-country UPS trip.

I called Jimmy about settings when I first got the bass, and I think he said there's maybe 2 dB of boost in the treble (relative to passive) with the pre in and the boosts off. I think I can hear that difference, but just barely, and this bass just doesn't seem to need any treble boost for me -- in fact, the other band members' reactions were that this bass has more highs than the Sadowsky Modern I've been using. I'd say the LG-5's treble peak emphasis is a little higher-frequency (the juice), where the Modern has that upper-mid oomph. Anyway, I set the A-C to passive and it's nice and juicy, fat and clear, just like that. As always, it depends on your touch.
Now I want a Sadowsky J, like a UV-70, just to compare. There might be an even juicier J sound right over that next hill. I wonder what an alder/rosewood UV-70 with single coils and VTC would sound like next to this LG-5? I think I'm going to be real happy with the LG-5, though, and I just don't want to let the Modern go to get another Sadowsky. I've entered the realm of Eternal GAS.

I also have never used the treble boost on my LM-5. Those pickups have a very nice upper mid and treble response. I agree, it's very different than your Modern... Fender single coil tone versus those big humbucking soapbars. I also dial down the top end with the passive tone control a touch for most playing situations.
The wonderful thing about that pre is you can dial in just a touch of bass, and all it seems to do is fatten the E and B string, versus revoicing the bass like the Sadowsky bass boost (which is also cool, but very 'active' sounding). I do hear a very, very slight difference in the top end with the pre engaged and flat, but it's very subtle. It still sounds very passive, which totally fits the 'old Fender' vibe of Jimmy's basses.
The Sadowsky UV with singles will be MUCH, much more aggressive (lot's more upper mids, much more aggressive treble, and a much bigger low end with the Sadowsky pre boosted a touch).

Currently, I've got my Sadowsky Modern (the BEST bass I've played thus far) and my Rob Allen Mouse 30 (the most fun bass I've played). My KBP-5 is due to be out of paint some time this week or next week, so that is getting close.
In order to not miss out on the miracle wood (which used to be my nickname btw
), I placed an order today for an LG-5, Dalbergia board, 3TB, Nitro, Vintage (bent) bridge.
BTW - I think there are only a handful of the delbergia boards left.
Currently, I've got my Sadowsky Modern (the BEST bass I've played thus far) and my Rob Allen Mouse 30 (the most fun bass I've played). My KBP-5 is due to be out of paint some time this week or next week, so that is getting close.

Nope. Jimmy said he might be getting one back in stock but he couldn't get any more spalted alder. The spalted alder one is also way more than I am spending on this LG-5 even with the Dalbergia fb and the vintage bent plate bridge.
Jimmy raved about the tone of that spalted alder bodied LG5, though.
