Hey, have you tried other strings on that LG?...I'm thinking your initial reaction might be correct for that bass. Not necessarily flats, but... (and granted, something is probably getting lost to the clip).

Thanks. I'm much more positive about the Hi Beams on the LG now that the sizzle has worn off a bit. That initial sizzle sounds GREAT to me on the LM, but kind of clacky on the LG. I think I will be leaving them on the LG at this point.

I have some Lo Rider Nickels on the way, but am warming up to the Hi Beams as that initial sizzle disappears. I think after another week or so, the Hi Beams should sound pretty cool. However, I'll put a set of the nickels on and see what it sounds like. If I dig it, I'll put up an additional clip with as much the same as possible other than the strings.

Very nice clips. I've come to the realization that the alder/rosewood combo is it for me for fingerstyle. Allows for that upper sizzle without the gank. I love the Hi Beams on my alder rosewood jazz.

Awesome Sound clips Ken. Your sound clips are more useful and more 'telling' than any of the camcorder clips I heard on the Alleva site. I can see why you love your LM5. The LG5 sounds awesome too. What a great pair of basses! Thanks for your efforts. Great chops too man!

Thanks for the nudge to do this. I was kind of laughing at myself a bit. I got out the big owners manual of the Edirol, planning to spend the day with it, and it basically said 'point it at what you want to record, set the level, push the button, and go The whole thing, from setting up the rig to uploading to the web hosting site took about 15 minutes

Hey Wilbyman, wha' happen? Just FYI, my LG5 fretless has an alder body and ebony board. Makes for a nice bright punchy sound, very growly.

Thanks! Also, Wilbyman pointed out in a PM, and I want to post it, that even though the difference in the sound of these basses is what I would call 'meaningful but subtle, the FEEL of the two basses is very different. The LM has that very unforgiving quickness and 'bounce to it', while the LM almost feels like the note sinks into the bass a bit.

your mention of feel is a big issue and what kept me from buying the 11 pound lm5 he's sending overseas. ill preface this by saying that Jimmy is probably the best in terms of working with a builder to achieve a sound. i know some guys would get annoyed by my commentary on their instruments. He's always been patient and doesnt look pissed when im going over the stuff that i dont dig or isnt working for me.

my initial appeal to these is that i want a 34" 70's style heavy ash 5 string jazz. options are somewhat limited in that regard. i thought the 5 he had would fit the bill until i started playing fingerstyle. now ive noticed this phenomenon on all of the examples of his basses ive played. (3 lm5's an lg5 and 2 4 strings). im not getting enough of a responsiveness when i dig in on his necks. i dont play with a constant heavy touch, but when i dig in, i go for a paul jackson style instant clack or crack. i also primarily play above the bridge pickup or right in front of it.

i just cant seem to get that sound on any of his basses without feeling like im fighting the instrument or digging in WAY harder than i do on any other bass. its weird, because i dont have that issue on any of current basses(bunches of fenders,fodera,musicman,peavey), but did have that on my old atk 5 and hotwire 5string jazz. i described it as "spongey" but reading "the note sinks into the bass a bit" sounded like a good description as well. i even had him put on a set of new hi beams to make sure it wasnt his strings. issue was still there. i look forward to playing some more of his stuff in the future, but right now im holding off. i told him im going to keep bugging him though because i really dig his building style and philosophy

back to that heavy lm5. to those that dig those, i cant say enough how much of a difference that heavier ash makes. that was the best sounding lm ive heard and was MUCH more legit than the lighter ones ive played.

Hey Zeb! Yeah, that old school LG has your name on it, especially with some less zingy nickel strings. I'm looking forward to you checking it out sometime.
