Hey Ken,

AJ is correct, alder body, blocks and bindings are the difference. The idea was to get a little "best of both worlds" thing happening. Not having played the LM or LG, I can't say how successful Jimmy was in that aspect, but after 10 days of woodshedding, four rehearsals, and two gigs, I can say that the RA5 is a sensational instrument.

It came out of the shipping box looking fabulous, and played and felt great from the get go, but the real magic happens when you play with others. This bass embeds itself into music and allows groove to happen better than anything in my experience. The active tone is wicked; crisp, punchy, full. I'm not even sure how to describe the passive tone; the terms organic, rich, warm, yet strangely (and wonderfully) articulate come to mind.

I can understand how some would not "get" this bass immediately. It really comes into it's own when performing, and it's hard enough to audition one of these things now, let alone trying to bring your band along. Suffice it to say, I understand why the hype, and also why you never see these things used. AC is all that and a bag of chips. Several bags....

Thanks! (to AJ also). That makes sense. I see where Jimmy discontued the 'ash/RW' model, which also makes sense to me. While I find my LM very warm and fat with the ash body, I can see the beauty of a 70's pickup spaced base with an even warmer (I assume) ash body. Cool!

I assume the 'modern' model is basically an LM with blocks and binding.

So, it seems we now have:

60's alder/RW (LG-5 5 string and 'Standard' 4 string)
70's ash/maple (LM)
70's alder/maple with blocks (RA)
70's ash/maple with blocks (Modern.. it's listed as Alder, but the picture sure looks ash?)

And then the totally custom, fancy top 1600.

Is that correct?

Regarding 'getting' the A-C, I agree it's just like with any other bass. If you are a lover of a modern, fat soapbar type tone, you might go 'eh' with one of these. For me, as a boutique J fanatic, I went 'WOW':D

Don't forget the Limited model. :)

Mine has a solid piece of spalted alder, hence no fancy top. Rosewood board and the pu's in 70s position. So it sits somewhere between an LG and an RA, but looks like a 1600. Go figure!

Well I just spoke with Jimmy today.. i ordered a LG5 with maple fingerboard..one of a few light alder bodys that are already in paint.. I am leaving the color up to him.. his girlfriend is and artist and knows colors.. and they know me real well. so i said suprize me.....
jimmy is throwing me a 50th bday party next week... and it may be done by then... so i will be in NY...
he is also almost ready to unveil the KBP5 from what he said.. i get #2 .. i will tell you who gets #1 after the guy gets its.. its a little political right now..
its my signature bass and i get #2.. go figure.......

Its still honorable. Look at it this way. Its a KB P5. No matter what number it is.
When you get the bass let me know. I have to figure out how to pay for maybe number 3. Would love a P as well as a LG.
My LM would have a small family.
