Yeah, on the 4 string the bigger style headstock looks way big too me. I understand the 'mass' part though.. for dead spots and balance though. Not that big a deal. Thanks.

Alleva Copollo sighting on the Today show! I just watched the Today show featuring 'Babyface'. His bass player was playing an Oly White AC5/Marcus Miller style bass with Maple FB/White pearl blocks and the black Marcus Miller shaped Pickguard. He played through an Aggie DB750 and I'm not sure what the cab was. Sounded really great, even for tv! Who was that bass player? Tasty chops.

That's the bass all right! He even played with the Chrome PU cover on. Very cool sounds. I like what I'm seeing and hearing from the AC's.

Jimmy just sent me pics of my completed custom LG5.. It was the last bass made in 2007 at 11 pm new years eve,
LG5 60's Pickup Spacing
Nitro tint on maple fingerboard
Nitro Inca Silver Body / matching headstock
Super lightweight old growth alder

I have been toying with the idea of a parchment guard or Tort but the black has that nice 70s look to it... I am open to any suggestions.

I should have it by next week.

+1 Beautiful bass! I totally dig the black guard... I'd leave it alone. Very classy and understated!

I played the Alleva on all my this weekend, and also on my VERY long New Years Eve gig at the Ameristar Casino in St. Louis. Man, it was just slammin', and so nice and light and balanced (the New Years gig was 7 hours!). These basses sound SO good and play so well... growl, definition, a nice amount of 'single coil grind', nice and quiet for single coils, even up and down the neck, tight and musical B string... what's not to like!!!!!! I still dig my beloved alder/RW Sadowsky a lot, but I've lost interest in other basses at this point!

I'm not an owner (at least not yet)... but I like the Black pickguard very much. I agree it's very classy/classic looking.

I really dig the pick guard look without the chrome plate and I love the way he curves the knob array ... just pure sexy.

The only thing I would suggest is to finish the bevel on the pickguard in the notch were the chrome plate would normally be. By finish I mean complete the bevel cut all the way around the p/g so the laminate shows.

Of course I'm looking at pictures and the instrument in person may be different for sure. I just thought I inject my thought if nobody minds. These are really intriguing instruments and I'm already 'jonesing' for one.

I agree with this. Since the 'non chrome plate' is part of Jimmy's 'look' for these basses, and since the pickguards are custom spec'd for his basses, it would be a positive to bevel cut all the way around. That would make it look like a more integrated design versus 'no chome plate'.

I agree with both of you guys. That would be a good thing to implement in to his design.

But at any rate, these basses are pure class and I would love to have one!

So your Alleva-Coppolo has eclipsed your Celinder (and I guess the Nordy's gone entirely)? I'm teetering back and forth between which of these two to go for. The A-C sounds like such a perfectly balanced instrument, but I'm wondering whether the sizzle of the Celinder might not help my clarity in the mix by compensating for my own more old-school fat (rather than bright) touch. Just so the D and G strings still sound big enough, which I'm still wrestling with with my Sadowsky Modern. I'm finding myself moving my plucking hand toward the neck whenever I play on the D and G strings and back toward the bridge on the B, E, and sometimes A strings. I'd like to sound big yet well-defined, and to be able to happily leave my right hand in the same position independently of the string I'm playing on yet not have it sound thin on the thinner strings.

My own New Years Eve gig -- at a community college in Western NC -- wasn't 7 hours long...it just felt like it.

Between my Saddowsky NYC and my Alleva Coppolo basses i have all basses covered. (no pun intended)... but for my applications they cover everything that i need and more... Im very happy and have not had the urge to look for anything else for a few years now.

I am pretty sure it is a stock hopshot B with Alleva Spacing...
But i will ask jimmy today..
He totally suprized me again. I did not expect it to be finished for about another 2 weeks..

Back to the bridge.. I will be the guinea pig on some special custom bridges that will be on my KBP5.. It will deliver to me with the normal Alleva spaced Hipshot B,, but we are experimenting with 2 different Bent Plate bridges too...

I still am amazed by my Celinder Update. It does the 'Marcus J on steroids' thing better than anything I've ever heard (including every hot rodded 70's J bass I've ever played). However, it's a heavy beast (mine is around 11 pounds or so), and while that very aggressive 70's funk on steroids thing works GREAT for playing that sort of music, the mid punch and growl of the Alleva just seems to work well with everything I do, from jazz type straight ahead gigs (of course, not burning classic jazz that really needs a DB, but the more 'cocktail' jazz gigs I do), to pop, to rock, to funk, etc. The Alleva (at least my ash maple LM model) has plenty of sizzle up top... I have yet to boost the treble control, even when slapping the old school funk. It does not have the massive, huge, deep low end of the Celinder, but few basses do.

The Nordy... that was REALLY not my thing. Great bass, but at least the way I had mine configured, it had nothing to do with a J bass tone in any way to my ear. It sounded closer to the Skold/MTD type thing than to my Alleva or Sadowsky. Nothing wrong with that, just not where my ear is at the moment.

Yeah.. i am digging the black too.. classic 70s vibe... I remember seeing my friend tony bruno's 25th anniv strat back then... and loved the look..
and its sort of 25 year anniver of jimmy and mines friendship... Inca Silver.. cant wait to use it on a gig...
