Back to the bridge.. I will be the guinea pig on some special custom bridges that will be on my KBP5.. It will deliver to me with the normal Alleva spaced Hipshot B,, but we are experimenting with 2 different Bent Plate bridges too...

Cool thanks, Kirk. Just the shape of the corners looked different than a B style. But it may just be me.

You guys are totally making me want to check out an AC for myself. My Nordy is Ash/Maple/Big Splits/Audere, which is a bit different from the Nordy Ken tried. But I would have to agree it's more 'modern' sounding and has its own take on tone aside from being 'Jazz body/styled.'

As a point of familiar reference, wow does the 5 string AC neck profile compare to a Sadowsky or Nordy? The Sad's were just a bit too deep for my preference, although I'm sure I could acclimate to that shape. The Nordy neck profile and feel is totally wonderful for me.

I was itching to try a Nordy like Ken's, but I think he saved me a bit of time and experimentation. My current Nordy is already as close to the ideal specs I would want. So maybe it's time this year to try something different like an AC! I would probably still go for Ash/Maple to get as much funk as I can while still nailing the Mid punch / growl that Ken commented about.

The Alleva neck is actually a little more beefy than the Sadowsky, and has a non compound low profile fretboard (really round feeling, like an old Fender... even on the 5 string). So, if you really dig the small, thin, flat Nordy neck with that 12-20 compound radius, the Alleva IMO would not be for you (only speaking of the 5's here... never played the 4). I find that the Alleva and Sadowsky 'back of neck' profiles are similar enough to effortlessly go back and forth between them. The Sadowsky board is quite a bit flatter (I think 12" non compound) versus the 10" (I think) of the Alleva, so that feels a bit different, but not nearly so much as the 12-20 and thinner, smaller neck profile of the Nordy.

Again, non of this is 'better or worse', but they are all different, with the Alleva being 'moderately' different from the Sadowsky, primarily the feel of the more rounded board and the slightly more beefy neck profile at the nut, and the Alleva feeling completely different from the Nordy in board profile, back of neck profile, width, etc., etc.

My Alleva LG5 neck is NOT as deep as my Sadowsky NYC from from to back.. The Alleva headstock is also thinner like an older fender where my 4 year old sadowsky has a thicker headstock much like a lakland does..
The Alleva fingerboard is not as flat as the sadowsky.. and i think it feels very comfy.

I love both my sadowsky and alleva basses but have been gravitating to the alleva for all things.

+1... if by 'deep' you mean from the top to the bottom of the board, the Alleva does feel a little thinner above the 12th fret from top to bottom... not sure if that's due to the more rounded board or actual dimensions. However, the neck feels a touch 'bigger' to me all around than the Sadowsky profile... not much, just a little more girth.

This might be partly due to the B and G string sitting a little farther away from the edge of the board versus the Sadowsky... there's more 'wood' extending out from the B and G, which results in a different feel for your fretting hand as you move up the neck IMO and IME.

yes.. I think you are right about the width.. It does feel good though.. I will have to measure when i get my LG5.. My old LG is with Jimmy right now...

These basses sound so different from the Sadowsky basses that you can pick anyone you want! These are very 'Fender' sounding versus the Sadowsky basses...even the Sadowsky with the single coils... dirtier, growlier, grittier... literally like a 1968 J Bass that happens to have 5 strings and a very transparent pre IMO and IME. They really don't sound like 'Alleva's' (like the Sadowsky basses sound like 'Sadowsky's)... they sound like Fender's and play like the best hand made instrument you can make.... very 'vintage' Fender feel and tone to me with a pre that just adds a bit of low end or sizzle without really taking the bass out of 'passive land' very much (versus the very powerful Sadowsky pre... which I also love!).

Ken, I know how you feel about your LM; my RA makes me feel the same way, it's hard to be interested in playing another instrument when the AC plays so well on so many types of music, and in so many situations. I can't say enough about how this instrument sounds and feels, and - though this sounds a little goofy - makes me want to play a lot more.

Since this bass has shown up on my doorstep I've shown the door to a Music Man, a Sadowsky NYC, and a Fodera NYC 5. In addition, a Fodera Emperor 4 will be leaving here pretty soon. All beautiful instruments, but it was obvious that none of them were going to get any attention with my RA5 in the house. Mind you, at some point I may make room for an LG5, or an RA4. :D We'll just have to see what the new year brings...

About the bass though, Jimmy tells me its real light too.. We picked the wood out of a pile of old growth alder... it was a block.. he made about 8 P5 bodies from a few blocks... I love a light bass... my L sereis jazz was real light and i loved the way that sounded... and i think it left an image in my head about lightweight... plus at my age .. not my myspace age.. haha my neck is tired.. so light weight is esential...
I was going to go Nitro but when i was in NYC last month jimmy was want to try a new painter to do poly so i volunteered to be the guinea pig once again... is piano black....

Jason and me have been the guinea pigs for a few years now... and boy is it fun....

i was asking Jimmy o build a 5 string version of the first real fender i ever had with a maple fingerboard which was a 71 Fender P Black with White PG and maple fingerboard.. but i am digging the rosewood that he sent me picks of today... after Namm i will decide which way to go on my final personal bass..... i thin i will stick with the rosewood since i have a new LG5 with a maple neck coming very soon too... that thing will be sick.. thats another piece of real light alder.... yeooowwwww..

Hey Kirk that P looks classy...looking forward to hearing it at NAMM.

Do you know if any of the NAMM basses will have the new bent steel bridges?

I dont think the Bent Plates will be ready in time..
Jimmy is working about 20 hours a day right now getting everything ready for when the truck comes to get the stuff for NAMM.. I think he has to have all stuff ready to ship by tomorrow.. so it is stressful and against the wire...

I dare to even call him today.. But I do know they are in the machine shop and tooled up for a few demos/protos... we just have not had one in hand yet.. Maybe at NAMM...
