Hey just thought I'd check in...

My build should hopefully be starting, so I thought I'd post up the woods I selected for my Ball 5. Ash body, maple "oval" neck, and the below flamed walnut top and "stabilized" spalted birdseye maple board. Aero J's, three band preamp with passive mode. It should hopefully be done in July. I'm excited. :)

I'm envious! My build won't be starting for a long while. I dig your wood choices. I was eyeballing that walnut on Cliff's page.

Hello all. I just secured an open spot that will give me plenty of time to get it right. I will be picking Cliff's brain as well as all of yrs for some ideas and help along the way.

Cliff said he'd start posting work in progress pics of it in the news page, so I'm checking it daily now just in case. :)

Never bought a high end bass without ever touching one (even a different flavor than what I've ordered) before. A little scary in some ways. I'm not really worried tho (otherwise I wouldn't have done it) because of the word on the street about them that I've picked up at this point.

Anyone have a quick blurb on Cliffs neck shapes? I realize they are pretty self explanatory, but just wanted some comparisons.
I have small hands and going with a 32" scale. I have a Clement 32" and she has a rather chunky neck that I, surprisingly, like very much. I have another Bass with a very slender/slim neck that is nice, but I find a little to narrow and crowded feeling.

Thoughts?
Concerns?

If you struggle to find comfortable neck profiles, I tend to advise people to look at their left hand technique. I'm not lecturing, but over the years I've found that good technique goes a long way when you have small hands. I once took classical guitar in college and the strict techique was extremely beneficial and made playing my 35" scale basses much more efficient and comfortable.

I totally understand and agree 110%. My technique is far from perfect, but improving steadily. I am more interested in comparison and feedback on the styles: Jazz, C, Shallow C, etc. Not necessarily what shape is going to make my hand more comfortable or technique (seem) better.

I think the necks on mine aren't Jazz thin, but I find them very comfortable. I'm actually a horrible judge of neck profile, which I consider to be part of my left hand technique. As long as the neck is balanced, I tend to be fine with most profiles.

I'm sure other users can chime in.

My perspective is, with good fretting hand technique (we're not all righties :)), no reasonable neck profile should ever be a problem. However, that's not to say we won't find some more pleasant/comfortable than others, and when you get into this class of instrument, I think it's reasonable to pay attention to that kind of detail when making choices.

Exactly. My build is a long ways off, but I would like to start lining up my ducks. With all of the options and details I would really like to get it right and end up with my (relatively) perfect Bass.
