The workmanship is completely impeccable. Consistent with someone who has the passion for precision Cliff has. BTW, he's also into precision metal work as well, having significant experience as a machinist. As a lot of folks on this thread also already know, he's also a great guy, a consummate professional, and a pleasure to work with.

The neck profile is sublime, the weight is perfect, and the body is nicely thin and very comfy. I can't wait to get this thing on the gig tonight.

No way cell phone pics will do this thing justice, so I'll have to snap a few quick ones later while I'm at home packing for the gig.

I'll try. This is one area I'm REALLY lax in here at TB, and will try to improve on.

But in the mean time, you can at least hear what one very similar to mine sounds like in a horn funk band mix by looking up "Here Come The Mummies" on youtube. KwTut plays a 4 banger that's got pretty much the same woods and exactly the same pickups, just his is passive only, as I recall. I don't know about the new gold one.

Thanks! If I can't snap pics tonight, for sure tomorrow, along with an initial gig report. :)

I started discussions with him last November, but we didn't actually start the build until I think this past May... it was the earliest I could get in the queue. He originally quoted me 13 weeks actual build time once the build started, and I think he ended up being pretty much right on.

Other more complex builds with more options may take longer. Cliff would have to address that.

Ok, so a couple interesting things about the birdseye...

Look at this picture, and then look above to the picture of the finished bass...

First, in the picture above, there's a good amount of sapwood on the left side of the board. This is "stabilized" so the differing woods are pretty much just an aesthetic matter. I didn't know that the board was much wider than he needed (can't really gauge that from this pic), so I originally expected a dual color board.

However, if you take closer look, almost all the figuring is in the darker piece, and let me tell you, wait until you see my close ups, but there is a LOT of figure in the board.

So what Cliff did is slice off the sapwood and just make it all the consistently darker and more highly figured wood. Good choice.

Also, it's a pretty dark piece... I was originally thinking it almost looked like it was "roasted" (for those not familiar, "roasted maple" is becoming popular with some builders, supposedly as both an aesthetic, but also as a stabilizing feature). But the other wood is clearly lighter, so I think that's just it's native color. Pretty unique. Never seen a piece of birdseye quite like this.

Thing is, I don't see as much birdseye in this picture as my board has, so either the picture angle simply doesn't show it, or he just went back and picked another piece of wood from the same pack that was even better than the one pictured. Not sure.

The bass RULED last night. This bass will definitely enter the "inner circle" of go-to basses. It's just such a pleasure to play. The thing only weighs 7.7 pounds, and between the thinner body and wonderful neck profile it's just awesome.

Here's some quick "carpet shots". Some close-ups show how superb Cliff's work is. A lot of basses, even at the high end, don't stand up to this kind of "photographic scrutiny", either, so this is a testament to what the man can do. :)

I apologize for the white balance/exposure issues... maybe I'll get some better shots with my full light rig and DSLR sometime. In the mean time...

My eyes! :D Quite beautiful Vic happy for you. I havent had a case of GAS in a while Vic ,you got me thinking my savings account is overrated! Glad she shined on the gig.

"Yeah, I might have to go with ash, cause I love the sound it gives me. It also will help with this bass sounding much different that my last two.

Cedar is very nice, but I do agree with the fretless coment! Sounds killer on my fretless, but I wouldn't recommend it on a fretted."

My build is still a long ways off (starting around March/2012??)
and I am trying to gather some more solid Ideas on what I would like. Can you please clarify what does not work (in yr Opinion) with the Cedar-Fretted combo? It was in the lead of my choices.

The short version of what I am looking for is Lightweight and comfy. As far as sound I play Funk, primarily with fingers, but also toss in some Slap. Sometimes a little aggressive and growly.

Not sure if all your questions are specifically directed at ScottM, but if not, an ash body is my favorite for what you describe above. Fairly aggressive. I also suggest a dual pickup model for funk. There's a certain sound you get from a couple pickups blended with a bit of distance between them, that I think works really great for slap.
