I have an Audere 4 band on order with my upcoming CB, so I won't be able to comment for about 10 months or so. Regardless of the method (4 band, mid switches, mid sweep), it's nice to have high and low mids available. The various mids can really open the bass up to all sorts of useful tones. I know most of the Fender-ites will say that we'll never sound as good as their Fenders. I will not only refute that, but add that we'll be able to dang near clone their tone and still have plenty more available.

Check out STA Swan Song on the Sam Oakes page. It's not much, but it was the last thing I was able to record before my last band broke up.

The audere nordstrand combo is the real deal in my opinion.
I went with an excessive amount of options (4 band, Z mode, series/parallel/single coil switches) simply because I play so many different types of gigs/music and wanted to have an instrument that could cover a lot of ground... that way I don't have to bring more than one bass to a gig or session. I haven't really tried many other pickup/pre options but if you ask Cliff he can give you a lot of info since he has used a bunch of different configs. in his basses. I agree with Sam though... it is nice to have control over the mids since that is usually where most the tweaking to adjust to a room occurs.
Also, for soundclips if you scroll to the bottom of the news page on cliff's site you can check out some dry samples I made of my fretted bass as well as a clip from my upcoming cd.
I should have some sound clips of the fretless soon... until then

you can hear the fretless at :15 sec to 1:15. By the way....this was the day after I got it. It was cherry!

Well...
Most the recording i have done since last summer (when i got my first CB bass) has been with people I have worked with pretty extensively prior to the session. I think the "session" scene is pretty much dead... it is still hangin on in certain places like LA, NYC, Nashville, etc but even in those cities there are only a few players who get called. it is pretty much non existent in Chicago. I noticed that as long as you sound good and get the job done, the people will be happy. And my CB basses sound great! If a situation comes up where somebody specifically wants a P bass or something like it, i tell them to buy one and I will play it. I take the same approach as when people say they want only upright or somebody who slaps a lot. I do what i do best and stick to my guns. Sometimes people are stubborn about it first but when all is said and done they usually they come around.

Heck, Cliff is lucky I didn't think of that before :bassist:
Basically the emails with my order information that I sent Cliff said -"Make this thing as fancy as you can". I really think he going to come through for me.
