After seeing Tom's work a couple of weeks ago I have officially taken the plunge also and Tom should be working on #178 soon. Tom also told me about about a 32" scale fretless that was on e bay. I couldn't resist and now sweet #36 is also a member of the family. Now we just have to wait for #178!

Beautiful bass. I love that top and it looks great with the spalted board. How do you like the sound with just the piezo?
Minor correction....the board is not spalted. Its a very rare wood called pale moon ebony (its naturally figured and colored like this. no stabilizer needed)
I have about a dozen piezo-only basses (this is the second from Tom)....I really like sensitivity and dynamics you get with the piezo. I'm especially fond of the pronounced attack.
I find a good piezo bass is usually constructed from the ground up for piezo. Lighter body wood, chambers, warm neck woods. Tom has a great touch.
Thanks for the clarification. I really like the figuring in the fret board. At one point it almost looks like there is a face looking at you! Thanks for the tip on the piezo. I haven't had too much experience with them.

I just played 167 with my Blues, Swing and motown group for the first time— Yowza! She sounded really good. I still may drop in a coil cutter switch to get closer to a jbass sound for slap, but finger style this baby just kills!!! I usually have one solo in this band during Chameleon ( versus every song in the jazz trio ). And I usually have so much pent up that it becomes an exercise in wankery, but I must say Saturday night's solo was as free and easy, expressive and explosive as any I've ever played. And I do think it was largely to do with how comfortable the Phoenix is to play. I don't ever have to fight this instrument!!
IWe're just finishing up moving, so things are still in a little disarray, but I will try to record this week on my computer or next week at one of my rehearsals

Other than needing to hit the gym, sweat a little less under the film lights and have the bass up a bit more in the mix it's a really cool broadcast! Can't wait to see it on the TV this week!

Well, Rich's bass with thethe pale moon ebony fretboard has become my new all time favorite bass. I plan to get one almost exactly like that one day. I have been through phases of favorite looks, but that one takes the clip by far.
