I find that high quality Piezo "pickups" offer more responsiveness, faster attack and increased expressiveness for a fingerstyle player.

When coupled with the right construction (light, chambered, "live"), they allow the bass to really sing. Despite conventional wisdom they're surprisingly warm.

Combined with a mag pickup they offer more dynamics. I have two basses with mag/piezo combinations....complicated electronics but both very nice.

Chambering is a mysterious thing. Sadowsky NYC are chambered, Rob Allen's are chambered. Taking some of the wood out changes how the body vibrates. My chambered Clement "deep" Jon sounds fantastic but i'm not sure how a thin chambered body will sound.

Whooo..... theres another sound investment of 3 hours of my life!! 177 sings for me!

Get to push her through the Big Trace rig tomorrow night, so another thing to look forward to!

I'm hoping to get some more clips in the coming days, will let y'all know via TB

I bet you play just fine, and heck, I'd be happy with some samples of plucked open strings. Simple samples are better than no samples. :)

I didn't get to post my response yesterday, I had written something... but didn't get it posted for some strange reason.

I see that richnota has responded already, thanks, mate! :)

In my opinion, the piezo in itself adds a bigger tone to the bass than the magnetic does. It is very "broad" and more complex than a magnetic pickup, and adds a very different character to the sound. It's hard to explain, really....

The chamber adds a little hint of acousticness, especially to the piezo tone. And it makes the bass much lighter to wear. It's also a lot louder when played unplugged.

If you go to Tom's site and listen to my version of Chicken there, you can hear my Anne bass in various modes. There's one piezo solo and one magnetic solo. The one that mostly resembles an acoustic guitar is (obviously) the piezo version. :)

EDIT: The bass line on chicken is played on Anne with mag pickup. The melody and first solos are piezo, the second solo is magnetic.

If you go to Tom's audio clip page, there's a link to the Christmas greeting on youtube. The fretless solos (not the melody line) are played on this bass. :)

I'll try to create a sound clip just featuring this bass, too. When time permits. :)

With the piezo, chamber and flatwound strings, it really has an acoustic flavour to it! :)

EDIT: Just checking... that soundclip is really bad on that video! Should probably try to get it to Tom as an MP3, I guess. *lol*

EDIT2: And.... I presume you're interested in the Q-Tuner.... that isn't featured in that Feliz Navidad recording. So I'll add it to my "to do" list :)

If you can get Audacity to export or save your clips as any of the following, you can upload them to SoundCloud.

AIFF, WAV, FLAC, OGG, MP3, AAC

Go to http://soundcloud.com/ and register (its free for basic use) and you can upload up to 2 hours of clips. Any more than that and you have to pay for it!

It's pretty good stuff and gives you basic tracking, so you can see where in the world people are listening to your stuff (I got one hit from the Isle of Man - thanks Jon! and another from Norway - Warthumb??)

Hi Guys,

My Trace Elliot 715 Combo arrived yesterday. It looks great and is very well made. HOWEVER, this amp does have the reported static noise issue. The noise is present regardless of volume level, amp position, bass plugged in or not, different outlet......very disappointing.

I never saw the postings about this issue prior to ordering. It was on sale for $449 USD! Oh well, I will need something else.
