My Trace Elliot 715 Combo arrived yesterday. It looks great and is very well made. HOWEVER, this amp does have the reported static noise issue. The noise is present regardless of volume level, amp position, bass plugged in or not, different outlet......very disappointing.

I never saw the postings about this issue prior to ordering. It was on sale for $449 USD! Oh well, I will need something else.

I really sympathise with you on the 715 Trace 'hum... one of my students bought one and then sent it back because of this... apologies that I didn't see your string before - I would have warned you about this problem with them...

When I teach I do so in a local music shop and I take my Trace Boxer 15 (yes, 15w...!!!) and it easily handles the whole range of my Warwick Thumb 6-string... even the low F#...

I originally used a Boxer 30, but the Boxer 15 is so good, and only an 8" speaker...

However, they are discontinued now, so you'll only find one secondhand or on eBay, etc., etc.

I will be sending it back, I have no experience with Bass amplification since, as I have said previously I am primarily a 6-string guitar player. Obviously, I have a great bass coming in the near future.....any recommendations for a combo bass amp (guess I should have asked this first prior to buying).

Here are my needs:

-First and foremost, it needs to be a good match for my Clement 183 fretless 4-string (single dual coil Nordstrand)
-Primary use for recording (I prefer mic'ing amps rather than going direct)
-In apartment jamming with friends (I will never gig with it)
-Primary music styles range from classic rock to R&B/Soul though I am not into the funk slap bass sound.
-Would like a combo but not against going with a head/cabinet system.

I was considering either an SWR Working Pro 12 to replace the TE 715. Any thoughts? Or is this overkill for my needs?

Very surprised with the quality of the deep stuff out of a small enclosure. Very transparent too, so you'll hear the Guitar more that the EQ.

Warwick do some bigger combos, that may be of interest, I'm sure the sound is gonna be good.

If you are considering a new combo, there are a number of great choices, but one brand which you should definitely check out is Gallien-Krueger.

The MB210 and MB212 are super lightweight, sound great, and don't cost a lot of dough. Plus, GK has great customer service.

Not any more! (not for practice levels anyway)

Check Phil Jones Bass amps. He uses tiny drivers, lots of them, but by all accounts, they're bassy enough for most tastes!

There is nothing wrong with 10" drivers in general for bass. In fact, Phil Jones makes some killer bass cabs and combos using 5"drivers. The question is, how loud do you need to be? If you just want to hear yourself, and hear a relatively "uncolored" amplified sound, then actually the Phil Jones Flightcase BG-150 is a great choice.

Getting back to 10's, some folks can gig out happily with a 2x10. I find that I need a bit more to get over the drummer, but two 2x10's work well for me.
