A piece of lead at the back?
This is no kidding. I knew a guy that wanted to play upright but didn't want to have an upright so he attached a piece of metal at the bottom of the body.

Hmmmm.....
This seems much better than what the guy did. His bass became really heavy. He didn't have a stand so the bass was still on a strap. Ouch his neck.
I know what I like. The Fodera is to artificial. The #196 is the craftsmanship. You can see that somebody, a person in life, has worked on #196. Just the looks of course.
Is Fodera trying to be as good as a Clement? The picture on the left is Clement Anne #196 ( I own it). Bass on right is a picture I got from the Fodera club that someone is having built.

Both instruments are completely hand made by a person- that's why we should be especially supportive of the work they do.

That's an awesome bass you've got in the making there.
I think we all agree about the idea of being supportive towards our builders. It's just awesome to witness an instrument being created from a few pieces of lumber into a singing creature with it's own personality. There is something to be extremely thankful for, regardless of whether it's a Clement or a Fodera you're watching getting built.
There are so many similarities, and so many differences. The Foderas are wet dreams for most of us... and highly unattainable. Too pricey, too long wait... although I guess I could cope with the wait if I could cope with the money. so I'm so happy there's guys like Tom in this business, too. Who offer his work at a more affordable end of the price range, and at a shorter waiting period. It's amazing that you can actually play the instrument a few months after the order has been placedd (months, not years ).
But in essence... it's the same process... watching lumber turn into personality and musicality.

It's not always easy to express myself in English and to be clear. The Clements looks a bit rougher and I like that and I also know that's personal. Like I said it's only the look. I can't speak for the sound. I hope you didn't felt attacked.

Oh of course not! I would never feel personally attacked through someone speaking their opinion.
I just wanted to clarify that they are all hand made, and that's one thing that is truly impressive. Tom is certainly much earlier in his career than the guys at Fodera, so he doesn't need to pit his experience against theirs- both are fantastic instruments and should be recognized as such for their individual strengths . That's all!

How thick should a chambered bass be to fully accentuate that chambered sound? Would 3" or even 4" be too uncomfortable? ABG basses are are about that are they not?
