Tom said it is very hard wood. I like the figuring on it. Should pop when oil finished.

Really happy with the way this looks 
Bass complete shipping tomorrow. Specs - 4 string lefty unlined fretless, Kim body style, alder body, Claro walnut top, 5 piece maple neck with Padauk stringers, Katalox fingerboard, Nordstrand Np4a and Big Split pickups, passive electronics, VVT controls. Looking forward to playing it!

I received the bass this week. It is fabulous! Great tone, very responsive and dynamic. Really glad I went with the Nordstrand Np4a and Big Split pickups. It is so comfortable to play. Just great. I am going to put together a vid of me playing it. I am not a great player but at least it will give an idea of how it sounds.

I'm becoming a HUGE Tom Clement fan. I got #493 this Spring and the bass is just incredible. I posted a NBD but wanted to spam a little more hoping some other folks contact Tom for a custom short-scale build. I cannot express how awesome this bass is--passive, Barts, pretty much any tone I can imagine. Play-ability is unreal--I don't know if you other folks with Clements have the same neck profile and how you would describe it. Been playing HOURS a day with zero, hand, neck, wrist, finger, shoulder fatigue. WELL WORTH the money! I think Tom's really been honing his craft designing ergonomic basses for years. Enough about me!

I know what you mean about the neck and playability!
Mine's a 4 string, and full scale, but it's just amazing how the neck feels all up and down the fingerboard.
Not chunky, but not super duper slim, and it just sits in your hand right where it should be.
Very stable too. It took almost two years before I needed to tweak the truss rod.
I never realized how poor the ergonomics of my former basses were until I got my Clement.
Not fighting your instrument while you play is a wonderful thing.
And the light weight is not something I fully appreciated until, like you, I realized I'd been playing for hours without any fatigue.
Seriously though. Tom does amazing work.
His pricing is more than reasonable for what you receive.
Plus he's very communicative and you'll never wonder what's going on with your build.
Yeah, naetog--I realized I hadn't touched anything since I got it from Tom a few weeks ago, the setup is perfect (stiff, light, straight neck, tight pocket). And, agreed, I'm playing a LOT more now--the neck, balance, weight. I love getting to watch the build get done and have input on stuff as well. It's like getting art you can play! He's working on a 23" scale for me now
